Marion Barry, the former mayor who was videotaped by the FBI smoking crack and wound up in jail, resurrected his political career for a second time Tuesday. Residents of one of the District of Columbia's poorest sections picked Barry to be their new councilman.

"Oh, my God!" Barry exclaimed when told of his lopsided win. The D.C. Board of Elections and Ethics reported that Barry, a Democrat, won 95 percent of the vote against a token Republican opponent. "We're going to be the best ward in the city, we're going to turn things around," Barry promised.

Barry, 68, served six months in prison for a federal drug conviction, then went on to win the same Ward 8 seat in southeast Washington in 1992. That led to a fourth term as mayor, which he won in 1994. Barry did not seek re-election in 1998.

This alone it showes the IQ level of D.C.

So he'll be able to support his habits and maintain his lifestyle. And Jesse and Al Sharpton support this. Being from Illinois, I wonder what Obama has to say about these things. I doubt I'll find out. I know what Keyes says (In your heart you know he's right).

"Home of the Million Man March," Rock bellowed, beginning a show in Washington last year which was attended by the mayor.

"We had all the positive black leaders there ... Farrakhan, Jesse ... Marion Barry. Marion Barry at the Million Man March. You know what that means? Even in our finest hour, we had a crackhead on stage."

-Chris Rock.

As one of the DC Freepers (I live in Arlington County, just across the river) I know Mr. Barry for what he is, one of the "Black Emperors"; former sixties activists who gained power, worked their way into public office and proved that activists make terrible administrators. Everything they say about him is true. Drugs, sex-capades, cronyism, corruption, waving the bloody shirt of racism whenever he got into trouble... it's all a fact. He could of accomplished great things, but he chose to aim low. I never met the man but from all I have read his once tireless constitution has finally broken under his decades of self-abuse and he is now a sick, tottering, old wreck. His reinstatement to the D.C. City Council was basically a sympathy gift from the same faithful, tribal voters who wanted to stick it to the "man."

No one expects him to live out his term. But, who knows, in his twilight years he might actually try doing his job for a change and accomplish something.

I request that we observe a moment of silence.

Like NYC, DC has to hit rock bottom before it can improve. Of course, like NYC, it will turn around and go right back into the sewer, but these things happen.

Save your pimp slap for current mayor Tony Williams for pouring out $450 million taxpayer bucks to play the stadium building game to bring the Expos baseball team to DC.
