It is a backdoor sneaky tax move. Ammendment 2 started out as a way you remove some segregationist language from the constitution. Nobody would have objected to that. Then someone added removing the language "No one is guaranteed an education at public expense". This would permit equity funding lawsuits to be won by the plaintiff putting school taxes in the hands of judges. In Alabama tax increases require public vote, we would lose that on education issue, if # 2 passes. Free College tuition would follow.

Hey yall!!!

We voted at a new place and was surprized to see so many young voters.
Hiway 280 was absolutely packed with all lanes bumper to bumper. Pouring down rain and BUSH signs everywhere.

Voted straight Republican and no on all the amendments.

D-I-L in Jonesboro, Ar. is a poll watcher today. She said they were lots of people there.
They had early voting, and my family on the Ft Smith side of Ar. voted Bush last week.

I sense a landslide coming!!!

I love having this thread for Alabama.

Let's keep it bumped.

It's an insult, I'm sure you'll agree, to provide at taxpayer expense what the rest of us has planned, sweated, and labored to provide for our own families.

Hellen Keller notwithstaning, Alabama should not join into the socialist movement.

We have an increased number of Yankees spreading their viruses here. I always tell them, "If we're so backward go back home."

In some places they tag the lines -- put someone at the end of the line to turn away late-comers, but allowing those ahead of him to vote.

It's not true. The amendment is deleting language that says nothing in the Alabama Constitution shall be read to create or recognize any right to education or training at public expense. It doesn't create language to guarantee that right. Our REPUBLICAN Governor Bob Riley (a very good man) supports the amendment, which also erases outdated segregationist language from the Constitution. He feels that it will cast Alabama in a better light for business.

The amendment has received a lot of negative publicity thanks to Roy Moore.

"Voted straight Republican and no on all the amendments."

Ditto.

During the last presidential elections, so many people in Baldwin County (east side of Mobile Bay) voted straight Republican ticket that every elected Democrat in the county was dumped. Zero Democrats in elected positions in the county. Mobile county may go that way this time.

Reporting from Tallassee. I was the 101 person to vote at 7:15 am. Amazing! Long line of cars and trucks coming in when I left. I work at AUM. Huge number of folks voting here. More than in 2000. Most are Bush voters!

I voted at the Madison (city) courthouse this morning. My wife and I were in the line at 6:30. Must have been 100 people in line ahead of us. The line was probably two or three blocks long when the polls opened. When we left, maybe 7:30 people were parking as far as six blocks away.

I talked with the county commissioners office later and they said turn out was very heavy. I just heard on the radio that some polling places have up to a 2 hour wait. But a friend voted at 10:00 this morning and was in and out in fifteen minutes.

I was number 874 at my polling place At 4:30pm, just south of Morgan City. Normal turn out there is 5-600.

We had to show our drivers license for the first time.
I don't think that's enough, though. We need to show our birth certificate as far as I am concerned. Can't illegals get a drivers license?

Roll Tide and Vote Bush!!!
And Shelby, and Bonner (down here in Mobile, that is).

I got my voting out of the way a little earlier. Went pretty smoothly down in my vote precinct, I must say. I was pi**ed off that I couldn't stick around and watch the poll workers to make sure they stay honest--state law is apparently on their side here, but I still don't trust poll workers as far as I can throw them, even the the Blue Haired old bitties at Travis Road Baptist.

Crossing my fingers and readying my CD player. If Bush wins, 'America the Beautiful' by the Black Label Society will rock my night; if sKerry the Commie wins (legally or "otherwise"), 'Hand of Doom' from Black Sabbath will best fit my mood.

6:46 pm CST .. I finally have gotten home from voting. Got there at 4:10 .. the people that ran the polling place here in Smith Station had not anticipated the turn out. I was going to file a complaint, but my bladder and feet urged me home.

On the machine I put my ballot in, it read 2241 and the other box had 2245 ... One clerk said in the 20 years she has been doing polls, this is the largest turn out she's EVER seen!

Sorry, I'm so late in posting again - got really busy at work and then supper and just now back at my 'puter.

I don't think illegals can get a driver's license in Alabama, so if they are "carding" everyone at the polling places that should leave them out. In other states, though, it does make you wonder.

I, like you, think voting is sacred and that one should have to produce AT LEAST a driver's license or whatever they give to people who don't drive (disabled, etc) - but ONLY that kind of I.D. which shows you are a verified American citizen.

I'm afraid I don't know that much about what criteria are used at polling places - seems they should have to also check against your ssn or something...

I voted early today in Lillian, Al. I observed some B'atch with a kerry/edwards sticker on her blouse enter the polling area. I immediately reported this to the Lead poll worker. I made him call the probate judge to comfirm if this were allowed in the polling area. According to our Al AG it is allowed for voters only, but not poll workers. I trusted, but verified the info my self to insure it was correct. I laughed aloud as I heard one kerry B'atch supporter proclaiming that she wanted to vote twice. I then asked her isn't that the way you people always vote(twice)? She became highly irate and stormed off in a typical democratic huff. Bush/Cheney 2004 gonna roll like a mofo. Dittos from Lillian, Alabama.

About the birth certificate. That seems to me to be the only fool proof way, then match to ssn. and go from there.

I'm not sure why there isn't a consistant way, times, id's, machines and ballots across the Country. Also a data base to cross check the info. Start at a certain time and make sure the registration is clear long before voting day.

Seems it would keep out illegals and fraud.

But what do I know? I'm just one of those sensible people
that get together here on Free Republic! ;-)
