San Jose's oldest rock station switches to Spanish programming

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) - The city's oldest rock station has started programming in Spanish, a move industry officials say was prompted by the growing influence of the area's Hispanic population and the graying of the rock market.

The last complete English song to play on KSJO-FM (92.3), which started as a rock station in 1968, was Wall of Voodoo's "Mexican Radio" Thursday night.

Instead of hard rock staples such as Metallica and AC/DC, the station now plays "La Preciosa," an oldies hit format featuring hits by Vicente Fernandez, Los Bukis and Juan Gabriel.

Also featured is morning host Alex Lucas, a fan favorite in Monterey, Salinas and 14 other Clear Channel markets.

"The fastest part of the market is Latin," said Clear Channel Communications Regional Vice President Ed Krampf. "And rock is having trouble. Young white kids are listening to hip-hop, and the other young segment is Hispanic. ... Sometimes you just have to move on."

My question is when will someone start up a radio format that is 1970's-80's alternative?

I knew it was all over out there when the old KFAT changed.
What was that 83? It was all downhill after that.

Music to my ears.

I lived next to a park near SJ which was used for parties every summer weekend. I loved when the Mexicans came for their music (and dressed nice). The gringos played trash rock.

And America slowly transforms into Mexico -- one barber shop, one house, one radio station at a time.

If that's what it takes to exterminate rock - fine.

I've had it for 1-1/2 years. You won't regret it. It is so superior to terrestrial broadcast radio, I hesitate to even compare them.

You'll really appreciate it on the road. Not having to deal with signals fading out as you leave a city is great. I've listened to XM40 for entire 5-hour trips.

Hispanic Americans are some of the best Americans, and I want them to be Americans, not Mexicans living in America.

Some are Americans and will miss the death of American culture just like the rest of us --- don't forget --- the Grateful Dead's Jerry Garcia --- he was a hispanic -- but not a Mexican.

Have you listened to the lyrics though? Look how much of that music is just about drugs --- drug smuggling and the glorification of violent drug king-pins.

I live down in the Salinas area. The only conservative AM station, 1380AM, switched to big band music on Thursday. No more Rush and Reagan in the car.
