SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) - The city's oldest rock station has started programming in Spanish, a move industry officials say was prompted by the growing influence of the area's Hispanic population and the graying of the rock market.
The last complete English song to play on KSJO-FM (92.3), which started as a rock station in 1968, was Wall of Voodoo's "Mexican Radio" Thursday night.
Instead of hard rock staples such as Metallica and AC/DC, the station now plays "La Preciosa," an oldies hit format featuring hits by Vicente Fernandez, Los Bukis and Juan Gabriel.
Also featured is morning host Alex Lucas, a fan favorite in Monterey, Salinas and 14 other Clear Channel markets.
"The fastest part of the market is Latin," said Clear Channel Communications Regional Vice President Ed Krampf. "And rock is having trouble. Young white kids are listening to hip-hop, and the other young segment is Hispanic. ... Sometimes you just have to move on."

Miami still has two or three english speaking stations left but they don't get any numberrs.
Hispanic population = little purchasing power.
graying of the rock market = huge purchasing power.
every radio station which switches = marketing idiots.
WTF???? KSJO is dead?
Not a surprise sorry to say. KSJO missed the boat when alternative came around in the early 90s trying to protect their morning numbers from Lamont & Tonelli, so they kept on playing far too many classic rock songs even after KSJO and classic rock KFOX became sister stations.
FM is dead. XM is where it is at now.
With KFOX serveing the Classic rock market, and KCNL serving alternative in San Jose, its no surprise KSJO eventually became the odd man out.
Don't think so. How many copies did Mick Jagger's latest album sell? (And it was good, too.)

Duh! I take it back, you're right - we're talking about purchasing advertised products not the music CDs. Double Duh!
Apparently --- but Mexicans have their own culture and language --- they've got no interest in anything in the USA except the money. They ruined their own country and expect they should be handed another --- one with fat welfare programs to boot.
Depands on the market it was sold in, Rc. I bought several for gifts, here in Penna. WE still have the h-u-g-e disposable income; wetbacks and illegals, simply don't. Better recheck the demographics. They're nickle-and-dimers, but in larger numberas; they still can't compete.

The music market is merely indicative of cars, furniture etc, but a valid indicator, overall. The Mex's have a long, long, long to go to catch-up to us graybeards. Which is why I'm so surprised at the radio stations caving to them for traditional *Gringo* advertiser demographic products.
Radio marketing execs aren't the sharpest pencils in the drawer, Rc. I spent 17yrs in NYC's Madison Ave, before quitting and opening a 20ac garden center-nursery.
I wrote "Chevrolet, The Heartbeat of America", "BMW The Ultimate Driving Machine", "Kelloggs: Taste Them For The First Time, Again", Western Union, The Fastest Way To Send Money", "BFGoodrich, Think Of Them As Tennis Shoes For Your Car", and many others.
I know what makes the adv-mktg industry go 'round and 'round.
I'm only a dilettante observer with strong opinions, but wouldn't you say that the radio (station) market suffers from too much competition (saturation) and not enough musical variety? I mean, how many heavy rock stations can the SF Bay Area support? And they're all heavy rock stations, it seems. The jazz station is gone, one of two classical music stations is gone (and the other one plays easy listening classics), up until a year or so ago there wasn't a country station here, muzak stations are gone - their listeners are all dead, and so on. There might have been something semi-rational behind this change after all.
I left San Jose in 1990 and have been in TX ever since,..... What ever happened to KOME (the wet spot on your dial) ?????
I also did Two years at SJSU- (Go Spartans !), Is the school station KSJS still around ?????
