Arafat disorder may be fatal

Ramallah - Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat is suffering from a potentially fatal blood disorder which will require more tests outside the West Bank to determine the cause, one of the doctors treating him said Thursday.

"His blood cells which should normally destroy microbes are currently destroying blood platelets," the doctor said on condition of anonymity.

The disorder could have been triggered "by an inflammation caused by a virus, a cancer or blood poisoning," he told reporters.

The supplemtary tests could not be conducted in Arafat's West Bank headquarters where he is currently being treated, he added.

"The doctors think that he must be transferred abroad for further examinations in order to receive the care needed for he could die if the condition persists."

Arafat has been effectively confined to his West Bank headquarters by Israeli troops for nearly three years.

However the Israeli government has said that it will authorise him to leave his so-called Muqataa base to receive treatment wherever he wants.

good a guess as any...

but my two sheckels is that the POS has something called

TTP thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura..
if the reports are true, he initially had a viral prodrome a few days in advance...then he developed thrombocytopenia..low platelets...now the third pice of the puzzle, acute renal failure...

the toad actually can be rehabilitated with steroids and even aggerssive immune therapy such as IVIG, or intravenous immunoglobulin...

predisposing factors to TTP include...AIDS among others...

well, thats just a few thoughts on my part, all things considered, its a shame ol raghead had to go to Pari for treatement...
I bet there are a few nice Jewish doctors in a nearby settlement that would take care of him real good.

peace out/
DONT FORGET TO VOTE..I SENT IN MY ABSENTEE TONIGHT.

this is indeed looking like TTP, now if we could only find out how much urine the old piss is making...we'd have our diagnosis.

I believe you are right about the itp. My mother was diagnosed with itp in October of 2003 after undergoing weeks of tests to figure out why she was losing her platlets. Her condition deteriorated just like Arafat's and she ultimately dies 2 months after her diagnosis.

I'm sorry about your loss. My friend was lucky - lots of steroids and gamma globulin pulled her mom through it, but it was close.

And hers was caused by heparin given during a heart bypass - apparently heparin can cause it in vulnerable people. It wasn't the true idiopathic version that no one knows the cause of.

My condolences,
LQ
