c'mon. it is not as if there's an abc office in every little town in pakistan, with a slot labeled "deposit terrorist threat tapes here." first, the tape is acquired. then it is viewed -- and rolled off for multiple copies. then it is shipped to the u.s. (which could have happened before it was duped, actually.) then the correspondent and an editor sit down and watch it and ask, "what the hell do we have here?" the news director is brought it. a copy is shipped to the d.c. bureau and the pentagon and h.s. guys take a look. they may or may not think it is legit, but they decide it had better go over to h.s. in any case.
i can guarantee you that if every crackpot claim received by the media were instantly forwarded to h.s., it would rapidly double the size of the government.
we have no reason to suppose at this point that abc has done anything wrong in its handling of this tape. we might find out in the future that they have, but to purport now that they have is to asuccumb to the worst kind of mob thinking.
