I think they did mortgage their home, and possibly Lee's business as well. I do know the defense ran out of money awhile ago....the situation cries out for a new country song. Like "we lost our money and we lost our home. But our precious baby boy is still sitting on death row". Something like that...lol
It would have to be a country western song. I don't know if you ever heard it or not, but there was one a couple of decades ago about the "perfect country and western song" and I can't for the life of me remember the singer. It has dogs, pickup trucks, trains, prison, rain, and mama in. And it's tragic. Perfect!
Hm. David Allen Coe?
"And I turned 31 in prison,
Doin' life without parole,
No one would lie for me but mama tried, mama tried...
She tried to save my sorry ass, the jury didn't buy,
Now there's only me to blame 'cause mama tried!"
With apologies to Merle Haggard.
