It wasn't the refusal to do the mission that ended their careers. It was the wives contacting the press and speaking out when the investegation is not complete. I'm sure they (the wives) don't have all the facts. However, speaking out complicates an already tense situation. This was a story with legs before they spoke up.
Would you want one of these guys in your unit? The next commander will have to tread lighly around these husbands and that's not a way to run a unit.

Their careers ended because they disobeyed a lawful order. Nobody else will have to put up with them.

I agree, and it would be best for the military if these "soldiers" were discharged as soon as possible. The media has already positioned these guys as the poor, hapless, recruits, and the military as the big, bad, wolf.
