There was a big mean age difference between the Whites and Hispanics. Basicaly, the whites have had more time to accumulate wealth because they were much older. The Hispanics were just starting out.
Of course, the paper won't report that.
It's not just age though --- hispanics with a 42% illegitimacy rate --- often having several babies before the American graduates from high school are dooming themselves to poverty. If you look at those coming from Mexico, the 2nd generation is actually worse off than the the 1st. They aren't graduating from high school. Huge amounts of federal money is flowing into high immigrant regions but really can't buy them middle class status.
Actually that does amount to the same thing --- hispanics households tend to be far younger because they start their families much younger --- the average white might start a family in their 30s when they feel they can financially support a family which is when the hispanics are becoming grandparents.
