In a face-to-face encounter with John Kerry's daughter Alexandra, gutsy Liz Cheney demanded an apology on Saturday for Kerry's decision to publicly identify her sister Mary as "a lesbian" to a presidential debate audience of millions.
Sitting right next to Alexandra while the two guested on ABC's "Good Morning America," the married mother of four said a Kerry apology "would be appropriate."
But Alexandra didn't stray from the Kerry campaign's edict that Mary Cheney's sexuality is "fair game," telling the Liz, "when you choose to be part of a campaign, you choose to make yourself public." The day before, top White House aide Mary Matalin also suggested it was time for Kerry to apologize - but so far the top Democrat refuses to acknowledge he was wrong.
The reaction to Kerry's "lesbian" outburst - and the way his campaign has mishandled it - has been overwhelmingly negative, with polls showing that, by a margin of two-to-one, Americans think he was wrong to "out" Cheney in Wednesday night's debate.
Some pundits thought that the gay-baiting ploy could be politically fatal, with WABC Radio's Monica Crowley flatly predicting on Saturday that it could "cost Kerry the election."
Even the Christian right - who team Kerry thought would be turned off to learn that a member of President Bush's political family is gay - has rallied to Mary Cheney's defense.
Columnist Zef Chafets noted in Sunday's New York Daily News, "Well-known political preachers like Jerry Falwell and James Dobson have gone out of their way to defend her right to privacy. Conservative radio talk shows and Web sites have been flooded with denunciations of Kerry and support for Mary."
>>>> OTOH, Kerry almost certainly knows Barney Frank & Barney Frank is a public figure
He could also have used his friend Gephart's daughter as an example. I completely think it was the wrong thing to do, but at some point if the Cheney's keep pounding this issue they will be asked to answer for their silence to Dr. Keyes' far more offensive comments.
LOL! Or her Flip-Flops.
Yes I sure do, but you need to know the left does not need to follow the rules
elli1, I've known about since the Republican Convention of 2000 when the news commentator on the channel I was watching made a point of bringing this exact point up as the Cheney family was being seated.
It failed then to impact the polls and was quickly dropped by the MSM.
It will fail, again, to turn voters away from the Bush/Cheney ticket, but seems to be having an impact on the polls. Much to sKerry and the MSM's chargrin.
They Cheneys have four children? Who are the other two?
This would NEVER happen, but would we all not be delighted if Lynne Cheney had whipped out a copy of THAT photo of Alexandra and asked her, right on camera of the show, to autograph it as a memoir of the campaign?
This idea is but one (minor reason) I will never be elected Vice President!
Ya - and Kerry still won't apologize - its really backfired and I'm be happy if it costs him the election. Poor Alexandra has no idea why it wasn't appropriate for her father to say what he said. If President Bush had outed her sexuality, you can bet the Democrats and the liberal media would be all over it. Using the other opponent's children to score political points has always been regarded as being off-limits in a campaign. Americans know a political cheap shot when they see one.
This was LIZ Cheney, the married Cheney daughter.
No, the interview was with Mary's sister. Not her mother, Lynne.
Correct that last line of my post to
This idea is but one (minor) reason I will never be elected Vice President!
Sorry, but this is early for me on Sunday!
Alexandra Kerry's response just solidified the "talking points" that no doubt went out as a response to this gaffe. You couldn't possibly be the fruit of Kerry's loins and not be morally bankrupt.
One thing that irritates me though, is all these demands for apologies on both sides. Never gonna happen, it is crunch time and will continue to get nastier. They all need to just point out what is wrong about what the other says without demanding apologies. It has long since lost it's effectiveness.
Liz should have bit4!-slapped Alexandra.
The DNC think that the GOP consists of a bunch of homophobe yahoos who will flee the Bush/Cheney ticket at the mention of a lesbian in the family ...
it's not a coincidence, since both Edwards and Kerry both have said it, and they called it 'fair game'.
I'd bet Kerry think he shot an '8-pointer' here with this 'fair game' ... too bad for him IT'S HIS OWN FOOT.
Aha, it was LIZ Cheney who appeared with Alexandra. That makes my fantasy thoughts even more appropriate.
Saw a great quote recently, though I don't remember it exactly (and though it's not quite on topic, it came to mind), "Those who do not believe in truth can be expected to lie."

Who give a damn about Alan Keyes comments?
