Our country and states must do more to stop this.

What do you suggest? Short of solitary confinement for every prisoner, 23 hours a day, you're not going to stop it.

Actually, solitary confinement is a great idea.

I was in jail several time (Operation Resuce related) and while I never experienced rape, I did have a few confrontations which I managed to handle.

What struck me about my weeks in jail was how people would hook up to commit crimes together on the outside. People were planning to get into the drug business together, etc. It was like a convention of criminals. Not that jail is a great place to be, but once these people are in, it's not all that bad -- 3 hots and a cot. They play chess, checkers, work out, talk, etc. It's not a place which makes criminals not want to return.

It made me a believer in solitary confinement. People won't want to come back if they are alone 23 hours of the day.

Did you read the article? The process for protecting people is broken, it isn't used. It's obvious that a lot of people supervising or working in prisons don't care about it. They have contempt for the prisoners (understandable) and treat them all the same, so the weak get trampled by the strong.

For starters no more prisoner mingling, that will stop their organization meetings, no more loitering in TV rooms, shower rooms, weight rooms. Prison is NOT suppose to be Club Med. What a farce that turned out to be. There are lawful people and children living in the streets who "deserve" a second chance at a productive life or a start in life and tax payers are giving the REAL criminals FREE EATS AND BOARDING. Most criminals commit petty crimes just to get back into the prison system for the comy benefits. I don't even have a work out room with weights in my house!

I'm with you ---- for one what did Coco end up in prison for doing? Maybe he raped a child or was some kind of pedophile? Did he murder another gay man and now wants to claim he's some kind of victim?

But I can see segregating the prisons --- put all the very violent types together and let them sort things out how they would anyhow --- the less violent types could be together and non-violent types could be together.

I understand that there are certain prison designs that have been effective in stopping prisoner rape and other abuses. For instance a design in which all the cells are arranged in a round pattern with a guard platform in the center. The guards can see into all the cells at all times. The prisoners hate the lack of privacy, but are much better behaved.
