This story provides a vision of hell. People go into jail for minor crimes and come out physically and emotionally shattered and carrying deadly diseases because people (incl. California's Democrat AG) think this kind of thing is a joke. Our country and states must do more to stop this.

Or not ....... it is sort of like natural selection... we cant do things in prisons that we used to do ... we have tv and recreation etc.... so the system is replacing it with their own hell.....
it is a prision ...... it is punishment....

While I'm all in favor of prison being a nasty place, I don't like the organized crime that apparently takes place in the prison environment. Squash that, society will improve as a result.

One way to stop it is for criminals to not commit crimes.

The candidates were asked in the last debate if they thought that homosexuality begins at birth. How many of these gang members do you suppose were born in prison?

because people (incl. California's Democrat AG) think this kind of thing is a joke Check out the "Martha Stewart threads" here at FR and count the number of people who take great delight at the thought that she might be beaten or sexually molested while in prison.

I am in no way sympathetic toward convicted criminals, but if the goal of incarceration is reform, then this type of activity must be stopped. Keep in mind, most of these men will be back out on the streets and having been subjected to this type of debauchery will in no way contribute to making them productive members of society once released.

Our country and states must do more to stop this. What do you suggest? Short of solitary confinement for every prisoner, 23 hours a day, you're not going to stop it.

It is horrible.
I doubt that there is really anything to do. The states have to pony up enormous sums of money to make prisons nicer, cleaner, safer, healthier, and so on.
The basic problem is the men who are in there. It's the same model as the dysfunctional folks in the horrible slums and ghettos.

This is really sad. I believe someone who breaks the law must suffer the consequences of his/her actions. However, this man in no way, shape, or form deserved to go through this. My brother did federal time for drug violations, and thank God he never encountered treatment such as this.

I've always opined that if the proper punishment for a crime is rape, then the convicted should be formally raped. But he shouldn't be imprisoned as well. One thing or the other, and with due process; that's my perspective.

Remember if you defend yourself in most big cities and you could end up in prison if you get the wrong DA. You might laugh about this but it could be you.

It's counterproductive to "punish" criminals by creating an environment in which other crimes can flourish. On the other hand, I don't have much sympathy for someone suffering in a hell of his own making.

There IS a solution but it will have to be implemented across the board in every State.
REVAMP the laws to include mandatory death sentences in more crimes. I would say that to sexually abuse a homosexual while in prison deserves the DEATH PENALTY, no trial, no jury, no reprieve. Within 72 hours of proof. DNA in someone's orafice would be enough to convict.
I am pro-life. If a person commits a heinous crime WHILE in prison, he forfeits his life. Purely and simply.
To: HostileTerritory
It should be stopped immediately.

The officials deny they mishandled the complaints and the ugly comments attributed to them.

This has gone on in jails and prisons for years and those in charge are very much aware of it and apparently accept it.

Oh now this is what we need. Prisons that encourage rape so we can turn those rapists back into society.
