Sorry if I'm being obtuse here, but...
The headline says, "Eli Lilly to Eliminate Up to 575 U.S. Jobs" which suggests to me that up to 575 people will be out of work. The second paragraph says, "...the affected employees will be offered other jobs within the company," which suggests (to me, at least) that these people will NOT be out of work.
Unless there is something else to this story, I don't see cause for any alarm, nor for that matter, the point of the report.
It's just Willie being Willie.
Our company (Lilly) has a long history of maintaining the workforce through lean times. There's the story about Lilly retaining chemists through the Depression by keeping them busy sweeping floors and doing maintenance until things turned around.
I can believe it. We went through something similar a couple of years ago and the company bent over backwards to retrain or relocate employees affected by the restructure. They even helped them look for jobs in other companies.
Our CEO took a symbolic $1 salary for that year (I know, I know. It's not like he needs to worry about a car payment).
