For the sake of accuracy can we please use correct terms and understand what they mean? An officer DOES NOT GET A DISCHARGE!!! Only enlisted receive discharges. Additionally, a Dishonorable Discharge and a Bad Conduct Discharge are punitive discharges and can only be given as a result of conviction by a general courts-martial. That conviction would be a public record and we would know about it. An officer would not receive a Dishonorable Discharge. He or she would instead be Dismissed from the Service.
What people are referring to is the character of service contained on his DD214, Record of Service.
Would this include inactive service?
I was an "officer" in the Navy and received my HONORABLE DISCHARGE in 1972 and proudly display it for all to see...rto
Sorry Chief. An officer doesn't "enlist", nor do they re-enlist, but when an officer separates from the service, a DD214 is issued and and discharge certificate awarded.
You would be correct.. we resign our commissions and/or are released from service. Since I haven't looked for my DD214 (from active duty) in years, and am still officially "IRR", I'm not sure what my release would look like (probably a board letter). Since I hit 24 years, I should be seeing something in the mail soon.
