FCC COMMISSIONER STATEMENT ON SINCLAIR AIRING OF ANTI-KERRY SHOW
Tue Oct 12 2004 13:39:02 ET

FCC COMMISSIONER COPPS CRITICIZES SINCLAIR CORPORATE DECISION TO PREEMPT LOCAL STATIONS FOR POLITICAL BROADCAST

Commissioner Michael J. Copps reacted to reports that Sinclair Broadcast Group will preempt more than 60 local stations across the country to air an overtly political program in the days prior to the Presidential election.

Copps stated: "This is an abuse of the public trust.  And it is proof positive of media consolidation run amok when one owner can use the public airwaves to blanket the country with its political ideology -- whether liberal or conservative. Some will undoubtedly question if this is appropriate stewardship of the public airwaves. This is the same corporation that refused to air Nightline's reading of our war dead in Iraq. It is the same corporation that short-shrifts local communities and local jobs by distance-casting news and weather from hundreds of miles away.It is a sad fact that the explicit public interest protections we once had to ensure balance continue to be weakened by the Federal Communications Commission while it allows media conglomerates to get even bigger.  Sinclair, and the FCC, are taking us down a dangerous road."

If it was a Democrat administration, the Attorney General would be calling up some National Guard troops to roll tanks into Sinclair Broadcast owned TV station buildings, tear gassing those inside. The mainstream partisan media isn't a monopoly anymore, so the Democrats are doing their bidding through threats and out-and-out thuggery.

I guess he's talking about ABC's and CBS's news divisions.

Michael Copps - “This is an abuse of the public trust. And it is proof positive of media consolidation run amok when one owner can use the public airwaves to blanket the country with its political ideology -- whether liberal or conservative."

Finally, the FCC's own Rip van Winkle, Michael Copps, wakes from his long slumber after corporations have distributed a flood of Kerry campaign propaganda films, to attack the one 45 minute news program that the Kerry campaign objects to. It's clear that the "abuse of power" is on the part of Copps. It will be interesting to see how people get appointed to the FCC.

What about when ABC/CBS/CNN/NBC work in concert to blanket the country with their political ideology?

But, but... what about my brilliant analysis I contributed on the other thread? It will sorely be missed, I'm sure...

I"ve emailed C-Span

events@C-span.org

"Is it possible that C-Span could simul-cast (sp) the movie "Stolen Honor" when it is played on Sinclair Television Stations? I've seen the Michael Moore movie played on television, so I would like to see this movie on television too. Last night the Sundance Network broadcast the anti-Bush Bruce Springsteen concert from Washington DC.

Thank you for your fairness."

So is this an official statement condoned by the FCC?

Or is this Copps, an FCC Comissioner, speaking as a private citizen?

problem is that it's the MSM who are calling it anti-Kerry, not Sinclair.

Just heard Mr. Hyman from Sinclair's remark on GMA against the weasel Dick Durbin, on Rush's show. Man, Hyman is a new hero - he really came down on Durbin and Kerry for not letting the Swift Boat Vets get their story out. Then he asked why Kerry was so afraid of a bunch of 60 year old men that had wounded and tortured so much in the Hanoi Hilton that they couldn't possibly hurt him. And if he is so afraid of them, then how could Kerry possibly stand up to Al-Queda. WOW

BTW - on LInda Vester's show was a guy from PBS (PUBLIC broadcast) Frontline series - they are showing a "documentary" about both men - they are including all of the stuff from the 60 minutes stuff with Ben Barnes that was called a lie by Barnes' own daughter. When Linda asked if they got her side of the story, he said of course not.
PUBLIC paid TV can put out a hit piece of Bush but a private company like Sinclair cannot - OUTRAGEOUS!!!!!!

The loony left have been sending threatening nasty grams to Sinclair .. their advatisers and filing complaints to the FCC to have Sinclair's license

I can think of nothing more fascist, un-American, and censorious as revoking the license of a broadcast conglomerate because you wish to suppress the content of their broadcasts. That's more akin to Soviet Russia or Red China than America.

Write a letter to your congress critter or senator and demand that public money be taken away from PBS.

Yet they have no problems with an anchor usurping the airwaves to read a list of the casualties in Iraq, which was obviously politically motivated.
The FCC is in dire need of an overhaul. They should only license wavelength so that signals don't compete. What is done with those wavelengths should be decided by the market and a free people.
