LOS ANGELES (AP) - The son of former police Chief Daryl Gates was arrested Sunday for investigation of possessing narcotics, officials said. Lowell Gates, 48, was arrested at 9:30 a.m. in Lakewood, a city about 20 miles south of Los Angeles, said Deputy Luis Castro, a sheriff's department spokesman.

Gates was later transferred to the Twin Towers jail downtown and held on $10,000 bail, Castro said.

No further details about the arrest were immediately available. Efforts to reach the former chief, who presided over the Police Department during the city's 1992 riots, were unsuccessful.

Lowell Gates has had a history of drug problems.

The son of the tough-talking police chief was arrested in 1978 for investigation of possessing methaqualone and an undetermined opiate, and was ordered to undergo drug diversion therapy, authorities said.

In 1979, he was fined $275 and served 48 hours in jail after he was arrested for investigation of drunken driving and public drunkenness.

Gates also was sentenced to 90 days jail in 1980 for parole violations, a year in county jail in 1985 after pleading guilty to robbery and felony theft charges, and another 90-day jail term in 1988 after he was found under the influence of cocaine.

I imagine it would suck to be him in an L.A. county jail.

I never understood why people who do good things are expected to have children who are immaculate. Honestly, unless your father is the Pope (a situation that in and of itself would have more problems than I can even begin to imagine), then I say you should be free to do every bad thing that every other child has the right to do.

As much as they try to be, parents are not their children. And sometimes a little LA jail time is just what they need to straighten out.

Now that would be notable, especially since the Pope is celibate!

But you're right. Good parents do their best, but can't prevent kids from making bad decisions.

I would imagine that all the gangs in the LA County Jail are today unified and Lowell Gates is Taking One for the Old Man!

Perhaps we should raise case to send Lowell soap on a rope.

On Second Thought. Perhaps Not.

Perhaps then by reverse thinking, I being a bad or poor father had no bearing on the outcome of my son? I cannot be expected to have a good son because I am bad??? Hmmmmm Have to think about this.

I'm not saying that you have /no/ affect on your children, just that you cannot blame parents for everything a child does. They have there own free will as well, and outside influences that change their ways of thinking and outlooks on life.

My son is near that age, I still tell him what I expect of him. Always been that way. Perhaps wrong method for most but I find it worked out well for both of us.
