An Iraqi-born Nashville resident has been arrested on charges of illegally possessing machines guns, following a citizen tip that Ahmed Hassan Al-Uqaily, 33, allegedly spoke of going jihad.
Al-Uqaily was arrested Thursday in southeast Nashville at his place of business after allegedly paying $1,000 for two disassembled M-16 machine guns, four disassembled hand grenades, and hundreds of rounds of ammunition from an undercover agent working with the FBIs Joint Terrorism Task Force.
He had an initial appearance Friday before U.S. Magistrate Judge E. Clifton Knowles and could face up to 10 years in prison if convicted. A detention hearing is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Wednesday.
The suspect has a prior arrest for aggravated assault with a knife in Nashville in 1997. He lived at 1285 Fourth Avenue South, Apt. C. At that time and was employed by Charpiers Bakery on Duluth Avenue.
This case has displayed the best of cooperative efforts among the various law enforcement agencies of the state, federal and local levels that make up the Middle Tennessee Joint Terrorism Task Force, U.S. Attorney Jim Vines said.
The lead task force agent on this case is a special agent with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation. Individual agents from the FBI, Metropolitan Nashville Police Department and the Tennessee Highway Patrol have also played substantial and important roles in the investigation leading up to this arrest.
Al-Uqaily first met the citizen tipster in 1994 or 1995 and ran into the individual again by chance in August when he allegedly expressed that he was angry about the state of affairs in Iraq, and that he was going to blow up something.
In September Al-Uqaily again approached the individual about obtaining four grenades and two handguns, according to the affidavit. The following week the individual, who was cooperating with the FBI, asked Al-Uqaily what he needed and Al-Uqaily replied two or three machine guns with clips and bullets, as well as missiles, according to allegations in the affidavit.
During further conservations in October, the individual discussed the price that Al-Uqaily would pay for the weapons and the suspect then expressed an interest in a missile designed for use against a tank.
When asked where he would go on his mission, Al-Uqaily allegedly expressed animosity towards the Jewish community, and a discussion ensued about two Jewish facilities in the Nashville area, but Al-Uqaily gave no indication of specific plans in connection with those facilities, according tot affidavit.
Further meetings took place between the suspect, the tipster and an undercover law enforcement agent posing as a weapons dealer, which eventually led to Thursdays arrest.
Too close to home ping!
so who was the good citizen? it would be real nice if it was a fellow Muslim.
I haven't heard it in the news, but I do believe it was another Muslim.
I lived in East Nashville off Galatin Road for a while, over 30 years back.
Is there a Moslem area there now?
Kill him.
Two machine guns??? Back-up or partner?
Give that "citizen" a cold one! Way to go. We've ALL got to be on the ball when we're out and about.
East Nashville is redeveloping into a nicer neighborhood. Not a "nice" neighborhood yet, but much better than it was ten years ago. It's still mostly a 'minority' neighborhood and has regular problems with vagrancy, drunks, drugs, and petty robbery.
Southeast Nashville, where this guy lived, has become international row. Both Nolensville Rd. and Murfreesboro Rd. from Thompson Lane down to Old Hickory is almost entirely populated by immigrants now. It used to be mostly Mexicans, but now it's everything. There are lots of South Americans, Indians, Middle Easterner, Asians, and Africans (mostly Sudanese, Ethiopian, and Somolis).
-"Kill him."-
With his own gun, yet.
Nashville is a multi-cultural paradise now. It's brimming with illegals who came here to make a new life and enrich our drab culture. The Mexicans are taking over as they have in so many other cities.
Another Iraqi was arrested and investigated about a year ago. He lived in an apartment on Thompson Lane.
Many thanks to the government idiots who decided to relocate militant Muslims to our city. It happens everywhere I know but such moves imprison Americans inside their own cities.
I'd shove the hand greandes up his tookus, and detonate him.
Only 10 years??
