I don't think we will ever understand John McCain. The most charitable view I can come up with is that perhaps he thinks that one should never denigrate a fellow soldier EVER, even tho he is despicable.....that's probably naive to say the least....but its so hard to speak ill of a fellow repub....you know RR's 11th commandment....
McCain and sKerry worked together on the MIAs. They may have something they both know about that they would rather that we did not know about. There seemed to be some funny business that went on - one being some big money contract for one of sKerry's relatives. Maybe more 'payoff' stuff was involved.
I have the feeling each is covering for the other.I am not sourcing this - just what I've seen before on FR and this is the conclusion I came to after reading many posts.

No, I believe McCain thinks that one should never denigrate a fellow Senator.
He has no trouble denigrating fellow soldiers who are REAL heroes--the Swiftees.
McCain sure doesn't adhere to the 11th commandment. However, in defense of McCain (shudder), he has said that Kerry's behavior after he got back from Viet Nam is fair game. He objects to questioning what Kerry did in Viet Nam--the fog of war thing.

....
I think it may be tied with the trip he and Kerry took years later as Senators to Vietnam on a POW inquiry - there have been some querilous hints of scandal over the years re Kerry and this trip and his dealings with the Viet Con...
maybe McCain doesn't want to open a can of worms?
