The Swingers: Why it could all come down to just a few key voters in a few key states

The baseball metaphor seems most apt. George W. Bush and John Kerry are like two weary but evenly matched teams heading into the ninth inning of the World Series with the score all tied up. It all comes down to how these boys of summer measure up in the chill winds of autumn.

Nationally, the race for the White House is just about as close as it can be, according to polls taken just before last week's second presidential debate. Bush had lost considerable ground from only a few weeks ago, apparently because of his weak performance in his first debate. Voters' reaction to the St. Louis debate (story, Page 42) and a climactic encounter this week probably won't be fully sorted out for at least another week. Though it was clear from indicators such as viewership--Vice President Cheney and Sen. John Edwards drew an audience of more than 40 million for their caustic exchange last week--and soaring voter registration--that this is one very energized electorate. On whose behalf, of course, no one can say just yet.

Perhaps just as important is the topsy-turvy news climate, with major stories tumbling onto the front page almost every day and the campaigns scrambling to explain them to voters from their own self-interested perspectives. Those headlines were doing President Bush few favors last week. "No WMD" led the news, explaining that Saddam Hussein had exactly none of the banned weapons systems Bush said he had when arguing his case for war (story, Page 38). At the weekend, another disappointing jobs number allowed Kerry to say conclusively that Bush was "the first president in 72 years to face the electorate with an economy that has lost jobs under his watch," even though 2 million have been added in the past year.

Since you're in Pennsylvania, I hope you won't be going to bed until the polls there have closed.

I'll vote early.
But I am so afraid of voter fraud in Philly and Pittsburgh, I don't think I can take it.

I'm worried about the reports of voter fraud coming in from all over the nation. What worries me is I've not heard anything about what BC/04 is doing about it.

ALL THE MORE REASON FOR YOU TO BE WORKING AT THE POLLS FROM THE TIME THEY OPEN UNTIL THE TIME THEY CLOSE!

I'm in Racine, Wisconsin. Maybe you've heard some of the news from our neck of the woods. The fraud has already started in the form of forged and illegal registrations. BUT I'M NOT GOING TO TAKE IT LAYING DOWN! THE ONLY CHANCE WE HAVE OF OVERCOMING THE FRAUD IS TO GIVE OUR PRESIDENT EVERY FREAKIN VOTE WE CAN..THAT MEANS GRASSROOTS EFFORTS..THAT MEANS YOU. PLEASE - START TOMORROW - DO EVERYTHING YOU CAN TO GET OUT THE VOTE IN YOUR AREA THEN TAKE ELECTION DAY OFF AND HELP YOUR LOCAL GOP AT THE POLLS.

If you already plan to do this...THANK YOU...if not..WHY NOT?

in SE Wisconsin, our local DA is a Republican, so illegal registrations are being investigated. I've heard "talk" that the national campaign is working on the fraud, just don't know what shape any action will take...but it'd better be soon!

In Winsconsin my extended family is going to be voting for Bush, this coming from people who supported Eugene McCarthy at one time.

Somewhere betweeen 1970 and 1973 I lived in Cincinnati and was a big Red Machine fan. My wife and I went to the drive-in movie and arrived just as the ball game entered the ninth inning with Philadelphia. About three hours later, the game was over (17 innings?) and I don't, to this day, remember what movie we intended to watch.

My voting place will have no problems......they are all Republicans.
I can't very well go to Philly.....I'd be tarred and feathered there....LOL.

Last time I stayed up all night watching the returns come in. This time I'll go to bed early and rise early.

If you're worried about election fraud in Philly and Pittsburgh, why don't you volunteer to go to one of those cities as a poll watcher?
