(Michigan) Bumper Sticker campaign so far - Bush 135, Kerry 91
Cars | 10-9-04

Posted on 10/09/2004 3:10:37 PM PDT by Dan from Michigan

I'm on the road often, and in the last month, wanted to see how many Bush stickers(And Anti-Kerry stickers like Stop Hanoi John and Not Fonda Kerry), John Kerry stickers, and Kerry/Edwards stickers I've seen. I did not count non candidate mentioning related stickers like Union stickers, NRA stickers, or Choose Life stickes.

Most of my travels are in two counties, one of which is staunch republican and one which is staunch democrat.

I divided most of this up in three sections. Bush stickers, the John Kerry stickers without Edwards(and anti-Bush), and Kerry/Edwards. I seperated the stickers, since the non Edwards ones are the die hards who are ABB. They didn't even wait. The Kerry/Edwards ones MIGHT be die hards, or might have made a more recent decision.

Livingston County:(Not expressway)
Bush Cheney- 74
Howell - 47, Brighton 23, Hartland 3, Fowlerville 1

John Kerry(w'out Edwards) - 15
Howell 12, Brighton 3

Kerry/Edwards - 8
Howell 4, Brighton 4

A 74-23 lead in the bumper sticker count. I'd say the sign ration is about 2.5-1(MAYBE 3-1) now(despite stealing) in our favor which isn't bad, although I'd like to see it more one sided our way. It was even up for awhile in signs since State Party was late in getting them out. I'm surprised I haven't seen much in Fowlerville, although I haven't been that way as much lately. I'm not in the Southern tier of the county, nor in Hartland that often.

Ingham County (Not Expressway)
Bush/Cheney - 36
Okemos 8, East Lansing 19, Lansing 6, Haslett 2, Holt 1

Kerry - 28
East Lansing 19, Lansing 6, Okemos 2, Holt 1

Kerry Edwards - 23
East Lansing 16, Lansing 5, Mason 1, Okemos 1

About 60% in Ingham is close to what I'd expect here, especially since I'm usually in the more democrat section of it - East Lansing/Lansing/Okemos. I'm shocked there were 19 Bush stickers in East Lansing to begin win. My one major surprise is Okemos. Okemos leans democrat with a lot of soccer moms, students, professors, and state workers, but I've seen more Bush stickers there than Kerry stickers. If Bush wins Okemos, I'd be shocked. I haven't been to Haslett, Holt and Mason much since I moved.

Signs - About 1.5-1 Kerry in Lansing, 2-1 Kerry in East Lansing, 50/50 in Okemos, and 1.5-1 Bush elsewhere Expressway:
Bush Cheney - 20
I-96 - 16, US127 and US23 - 2 each
Kerry - 7, all I-96
Kerry/Edwards - 2, all I-96

Elsewhere
Bush
3 - Washtenaw County
2 - Oakland County

Kerry
4 - Washtenaw County
1 - Oakland County

Kerry/Edwards
2 Oakland, 1 Washtenaw

Signs - Washtenaw: Kerry's dominating Ann Arbor 100% from what I've seen. I was only on Maple Rd though. 2-1 Kerry in Scio. I HAVE seen a lot of local GOP signs in Scio of all places, so it's not all bad news there.

Oakland: Probably 1.5 to 2-1 Bush in Milford, Novi and Wixom from what I saw. Farmington Hills was shockingly 50/50. I figured it'd be much more pro-Kerry. Even better was the amount of Bill Largent signs I saw. Maybe Aldo Vagnozzi will be retired!!!!

Here in Ann Arbor, as expected, the Kerry bumper stickers still significantly out number the Bush ones. However, I've seen a definate increase in Bush stickers. I was even in the drive-up line at the bank and the 2 cars in both aisles each had a Bush sticker.

I live in Macomb County area of MI which is a suburb county in Metro Detroit. I have seen way more Bush stickers than Kerry stickers. But the only way those stickers/ signs get out there is by volunteering for the local GOP or victory centers. A great idea is to get a bunch of signs/ stickers and hand them out just off large church property. By law, you have to be off the property or they can lose their tax exempt statues. This election will be close--- so we need our workforce!! And it does make a huge difference.

Dan, speaking on the subject of signage have you seen these giant roadside signs (maybe 4'H x 6'W) that say "Sportsmen for Kerry?" I'm at my cottage in Montmorency County this weekend and they are all over the place, and it is republican territory although sparsely populated. You can't help but laugh and stare, it was kind of a shocker as I have not seen them before today.

I'll get it is the union thugs up on hunting excursions...

Probably union officials on vacation. (It's Turkey season right now)

I saw one of those off the expressway right by my place and nearly took white out to it and wrote "Ban the .30-30! Vote Kerry".

Then thought better of it.

"I am seeing loads and loads of yellow ribbon shaped "support the troops" stickers."

I've been seeing them all over the place here in Indiana County, Pa. as well. Let's hope you're right about them being Bush supporters! I kinda figured they probably are too!

(get = guess #24)

Yeah, I thought better of it too. Shooting a giant Kerry sign with my semi-automatic paintball gun w/laser scope would have been no challenge. Instead we shot up our Kerry-Edwards yard sign in the back yard with red paintballs.

I live in a suburb of Mpls/St. Paul - Bush signs out-weigh Kerry 4:1 . Yesterday I was driving Western Wisconsin and Bush signs outnumbered Kerry at least 15:1!

Glad to know I'm not the only one who counts stickers! I've been counting for about a month here in Florida. I live in Orlando, so most of the count is from that area, but I make frequent trips to the west coast (St. Petersburg) and count the ones on the way there and over there as well. I count only candidate stickers or anti-kerry or anti-bush stickers. And not at campaign events either. Bush 75 Kerry 56 hehe Yesterday, on a trip to St. Pete, a pickup truck with a Kerry sticker, anti-bush one, and a Code Pink one passed me and purposely slowed down in front of me to show off his stickers since I have a Bush one. We got stuck in traffic several times together and kept having to pass each other. I only saw about 3 Kerry stickers on the way, and about 15 Bush ones, so he was very outnumbered!

We have an entire street with Kerry signs in Utica. It is such a pity.

I like this line...
"Okemos leans democrat with a lot of soccer moms, students, professors, and state workers"

WOW are you being kind to Okemos!!! My BIL and SIL live there and I have never seen a bigger group of flaming liberal, elitist in my entire life!

When we went to Mackinaw Island this summer, I remarked to my hubby that I did not like it because it was nothing but "Yuppies Going Shopping". At just that moment a girl with an "Okemos Golf League" shirt walked by.
We looked at each other and broke into hysterics!

It's well made up by a drive through Cuyahoga county.
Kerry signs abound.

I've seen a bunch of upside down American flag stickers on cars here in Skerry Country (near L.A.). What the heck does that mean? At first I thought, they must not realize they put their sticker on upside down but then I saw it again and again. My husband just said it's more of the same, "I hate America" crowd, but what does it mean? Anyone?

Today, I walked for an hour plus in Lincoln Park and a little bit of Wyandotte. The sign count was 52/29 in favor of Kerry, so about 36% Bush. This was probably the nicer part of both towns.

I drove through Allen Park last week. The sign count was 99/98 in favor of Bush, and I haven't been through an area which was decidedly pro Bush from my visits before.

I wonder how the sign percentage translate into voting percentage. I'm taking a guess that whatever the leader is above 50%, the voting amount is half that. For example, if I see 70% Kerry signs, I'll assume that the intimidation factor of not wanting to display a sign in the midst of Kerry supporters will come into play, and that the voting percentage will be half of the amount (70-50) over the 50% or 60% on voting day.

I was at the U of M football game yesterday and when I drove through AA there was a lot more Anti-war anti Bush signs then even pro Kerry signs. Not many BC in the yards, but at the game mostly BC stickers. The CR at Michigan do a good job at the games. Also I saw one of the vendors at the game have a yard sign that I haven't seen before. It was orange and black with a jack-o-latrn saying " President Kerry, Now thats Scary"

btw is there a website to look up where BC victory centers are.

I drove from Grand Rapids to Southfield today (Southfield Exit off 696) and was surprised to see more Bush bumper stickers than Kerry. I didn't count though, so can't provide numbers. In addition, I saw 2 Bush billboards, and 4 or 5 large Bush signs on property along the expressway. No Kerry billboards, and 1 lame Sportsmen for Kerry big sign.

Since you seem to know Michigan well, I wondered if you had any comment about a Kerry mailing I received today. It was addressed using my full name, the only mail I get like this come from Michigan, where I went to school. Do universities sell mailing lists?

I would not be surprised if U-M sold the list. Or any college for that matter.

Unfortunatly, that Sportsmen for Kerry sign is about 2 miles from my place. Union types I think own the property there. They had dem signs there in 02 as well for union backed candidates.

I know where at least two or three of the Bush billboards were at. Fowlerville and Webberville have a couple of them along the highway. I pass by them almost every day.

BTW - Did you see the plywood signs for my state rep(Joe Hune). That was a low budget move from 2002, and it worked so well that they brought them back.
