THE YANKEES WIN! Take 2-1 lead in the series

Posted on 10/08/2004 8:14:58 PM PDT by Nascardude

What a great night. Bush kicks Kerry's butt in the debate, and now the Yankees move into 2-1 lead over the twins. I can smell a Sox/Yanks rematch in the ALCS

I'm with Joe Queenan when he says that there's no such thing as a "die-hard Yankee fan." Why? Because you've never had to die. OK, you lost the 2001 and 2003 World Series (and didn't even make it in 2002), but George just went out and threw a few zillion dollars at some more All-Stars.

Joe Queenan is full of it. I grew up a Yankee fan when my team went 14 years between playoff appearances (1981-1995. Older Yankee fans than me went 12 years without playoff appearances (1964-76). That's something that's conveniently forgotten by Yankee-haters.

Try being a fan of the Red Sox, the White Sox, the Cubs, the Mets, the Phillies, the Brooklyn Dodgers, the Montreal Expos... THOSE fans have had to die. But not Yankee fans. You cannot compare yourselves with the rest of us, so don't try.

Again, do you even remember what the baseball world was like in the 80s? In New York, the Mets were the trendy team to root for, while the Yankees were out of it every year. You've frankly got some nerve accusing Yankee fans of not being real fans, when you are woefully unaware of how many dry spells the Yankees have had over the years.

We'd "prefer" the "TWINS" in the playoffs...

You already got most of our Twins and one of them(ortiz), sealed your 1st round victory tonight! Mintkiewitz may not have the best bat in the run to the series but his defence will save an error here and there. We already did you a favor, so you owe us! How bout letting us borrow ortiz tomorrow so we can spot Santana 10 runs in the 1st inning!!

Doesn't matter who wins the ALCS. The world Series will be won in front of the hometown crowd at Busch Stadium.

Oh, poor Yankee fans. They went 12 whole years without a championship. My heart bleeds. NOT!

My Yankee-hating tradition goes back several generations. My father's family were die-hard Tigers fans (back in the 40s, Dad used to hitchhike from Lansing to Detroit for games), and Mom's family were Philadelphia Athletics fans. My grandfather and his older brother were both recruited by the A's back in the 1920s.

The Phillies (a team that is older than the Yankees) went about 100 years before their FIRST championship in 1980 and haven't won one since. They've been in the WS twice since then and lost both times.

The Cubs are older than the Yankees too, and haven't won anything since 1908. They haven't even BEEN to the WS since the 1940s. The White Sox last won in the early 1900s, haven't been in the WS since the 1950s. The Indians haven't won since the 1950s. The Giants haven't won a WS since they left NY in the 50s.

Yankee fans have absolutely no right to whine. Yet here they are, acting as if those of us who root for the other 29 teams have to feel sorry that they haven't won a WS since 2000. That any WS that wasn't won by the Yankees doesn't count. That we all have to lie down and let the Yankees win because, after all, they're the Yankees!

Give me a break.

I was at a bar in Manhattan last year during Game 6 of the WS. When the Yankees lost, my friends and I celebrated. We were jumping up and down, screaming, hugging each other and all that. Some woman came up to me and demanded to know how I could be in NY and not root for the Yankees. She just oozed bandwagoner, so I thought I'd test her. I asked her what team(s) Joe Torre managed before he came to the Yankees. She had no clue. I then asked her to explain the infield fly rule to me. She cursed me out and walked away. And she was pretty typical of the Yankee fans I run across here in NYC.

I despise the Yankees and their bandwagon-jumping fans about as much as I do Democrats. And that's saying a lot.
