I'm a Chi Psi from Berkeley. We promised not to tell what goes on in initiation (and I take that promise seriously) but I never took a promise on saying what we don't do. And I can definitely tell you that the acts described in this article are NOT part of the initiation procedure.
I can also tell you that if national had any idea that kind of crap was going on, those involved would be kicked out. National sends representatives, usually fairly recent grads who know the kind of crap that can go on and what signs to look for, to check on the various chapters to make sure that these things do not happen. If the allegation in this article are true, then anyone involved will not get to continue calling themselves brothers.
And on that note, where were his pledge brothers? Our pledge class, at the very beginning of things, decided that if any of this kind of crap went down, we would all walk. That didn't have to happen but that is the type of loyalty his pledge brothers should have shown.

"...where were his pledge brothers? "
I wonder that as well.
It's good to hear that the brothers in your fraternity would walk if they saw this behaviour.

We had several alcohol-based hazing events during my pledgeship and the key thing was to plot with your pledge brothers ways to pour out the excess liquor without getting caught. Pour it out the window. Into potted plants. Into couches. Etc. His pledge class let him down.
