Woman Appears In Court For Eating Candy At Metro Station

WASHINGTON -- A woman from Bowie, Md., who was arrested for eating a candy bar at a Metro station, had her day in court Thursday, but it was a brief visit.

Stephanie Willett claims she was frisked under her shirt, handcuffed and held for three hours after a Metro transit officer confronted her for eating a candy bar on the escalator.

Transit police claim Willett was "belligerent."

In court Thursday, Willett tried to tell a judge what happened that day, but she was cut off after a few minutes. The judge told Willett her case is over and that it ended when she posted $10 to get out of jail last July.

Willett has a year to appeal the arrest.

The incident gained worldwide attention, and goes on a list of other Metro Transit Police actions that have raised both eyebrows and questions.

In September, a transit officer reportedly forced a pregnant woman down on the floor and pushed his knee in her back, after he claimed she was talking too loud on a cell phone.

In 2002, an officer ticketed a wheelchair-bound cerebral palsy patient who the officer said cursed when he was unable to find a working elevator to exit the system.

And in 2000, an officer handcuffed a 12-year-old girl for eating a french fry on a subway platform.

It seems to me that they had to put something down on paper when your wife was booked into jail... What was it?

this is just a TYPICAL example of the judicial system and how a judge makes a decision without even allowing discussion. oh it makes me crazy. there is simply so much abuse from these idiots. a judge who doesn't listen should be fired!

Transit police claim Willett was "belligerent."

Since when is that illegal?

While I agree that DC police exists to generate revenue and not for public safety, that pregnant woman was talking very loudly on her cell with many 4-letter profanities. When the officer asked her to stop, she screamed at him and cursed at him.

There is not food allowed in the Metro station.

IIRC, the food was in her mouth.

The cop told her not to enter with the food.

She stuffed it in her mouth then walked through the turnstyle.

Then she was arrested.

In the North Korean propaganda village of Kichong-dong commuters board the buses in perfect order...no crying brats, jackasses screaming into cellphones "no whaddam-sayin," no rude broad chompin'on a Snickers or the like. And by golly it'll stay that way as long as the little fellers keep their Ak-47s pointed at the transit queue.

Thanks for the illumination. Still doesn't exuse knocking a pregnant woman to the floor and kneeing her in the back.

"I want candy" song is now playing in my head.

To kick that song out of your head, just remember that the girl who sang it was just 13 years old.

Which begs the question, I guess: is food in the mouth about to be swallowed within seconds the same as entering with a candy bar in the wrapper.

OK, let's that's one vote for subways becoming public s**tholes.

LOL!

If you don't like the subway, don't take it.

It's not that complicated, is it?

We get the government we deserve.

I'm just glad we don't get all the government we pay for.

You go right on thinking that. I like it when ignorant people think they know what's reality.

If you don't like the subway, don't take it.

If I'm in the subway, I'm a paying passenger. I agreed to abide by the regulations by buying a ticket. So did the a$$hole next to me.

BTW, in your little fantasy world where your right to be an a$$hole trumps everyone else's rights, the end result is the same: a fellow citizen will get tired of your s**t and shoot you in the back.

I totally agree with Giuliani about small things being related to big things, but I question whether the punishment fits the "crime" in any of these examples. I see no reason to arrest any of these people, but citations are in order if there is a violation of the law. In addition, there is no reason to get physical with any of these people. If an officer has to resort to violence with someone eating a candy bar or talking too loud in public, then there is something seriously wrong with the officer's methods.

Your fists against a magazine full of 9MM?

I'm betting on the 9MM. I haven't met anyone who can out-bad-a$$ 10+ bullets. I've known a couple who thought they could. They're now deceased.
