You'd like Virginia. Lots of mountains, streams, valleys, and you can have the beach, marinas and cities anytime you want them.
The plus is that we are a pretty nice group of folks.
I agree, Virginia is beautiful, but avoid Northern Virginia (suburban Washington DC) if you want to be around lots of conservatives. We're a rare breed around here (on the other hand, the DC area Freepers are great and have tons of fun!).

Take it from a Democrat, this is a very conservative place.
Nice people, beautiful landscape, good gun laws (and getting better), taxes aren't too awful and a good economy.

My brother-in-law will be retiring from the military soon and might end up working in the DC area.
What is the Shenandoah Vally like? How about the upper Potomic?
