When considering what Patton would think, it's worth mentioning that he served as an aide-de-camp to Gen. Pershing during WWI, not many years after Pershing's dealings with the Moros. I'm surprised that the author failed to comment on that; surely Patton heard stories about Islamic fanaticism from the man who is roundly praised for knowing how best to deal with the moon-god-worshippers.

He probably would have shot them himself. What a man.

Guys like Patton, Alvin York, Audie Murphy - they don't make them like that anymore.

"Gen. George S. Patton III, the flamboyant field commander ... came to Boston to blast Kerry for "probably" causing "some of my guys to get killed" by his dissidence. "There's no soap ever been invented that can wash that blood off his hands."

WOW!!!!!

Got to remember THAT line!!!!!!

I know. It is incredible that the media never mentions that in 1984 Patton's son was a real thorn in Kerry's side.

Especially because he died right before the campaign began.

It's not Mt. St. Helens you hear. It's Patton turning over in his grave.

"He would not have said anything, Ted Kennedy would have him up on charges for slapping that solider and John Kerry would be claiming Patton ordered him to commit atrocities in Vietnam."

Interesting you should say that. Gen. George S. Patton III (Patton's son) was a general officer in Vietnam. General Westmoreland said he was as much a hard charger as his famous father.

A modern Patton would not be bothered by such inconsistency. Rather he would make sure that he had not only defeated the terrorists and their supporters, but had done so in such damaging fashion that none in the Middle East might find such a repugnant cause at all romantic, bringing as it did utter ruin as the wage of the wrath of the United States.

There it is. I couldn't agree with you more.

You are 100% right, and this is confirmed to me by USMC guys from Fallujah.

BTW, I love Hanson, but I disagree with his support of Patton's "narrow front" strategy. Germany, as we learned in Market Garden, was far from "collapsing"---either to us or to the Russians. We also had an ally, Great Britain, whose civilians were under constant attack by V-2 rockets.

I've read several bios of Ike, and conclude that he was right and Patton wrong---Patton's forces would have been cut off, then surrounded. The broad front, while costing us Berlin and some of the Balkans, was the right strategy.

Patton had many "political" problems when he was trying to shorten the second World War. I can only imagine the "political correctness" problems he'd have now. God bless General George S. Patton! I wish we had him around right now. Common sense is a very appealing quality.

Excellent article. We seem to be compelled to avoid defeating an enemy. It's as if it's not considered 'sporting' to actually win. War is not a game, certainly not one we want to keep replaying.

I believe that GSP III is still alive. He's about 80, and I'd love to see some 527 put him in a TV commercial. Images of his father wouldn't hurt.

"There's no soap ever been invented that can wash that blood off his hands." THAT is the line I'd like to hear.

What Would Patton Say About the Present War?

With all due respect for the sacrifices dearly expended thus far, Patton wouldn't have used the term war to describe it the first place.
