For the record: I believe that General Grange retired as a Lieutenant General. In any event, he would not have commanded the 1ID as a Brigadier General.

Paw,
I caught that too... he could have commanded the 1st ID as a BG (P) while awaiting promotion but would have been a MG for most of his tenure.

For the record, Grange commanded the 1st ID as a major general, but he DID retire as a brigadier general.
