Drudge stated Kerry folks said it was a pen on his radio show. On his online story now he states that they laughed at Drudge when he pointed out a pen was a violation (they're cocky and know the media is in the bag - after all Lehrer watched Kerry do it and didn't say or do anything).

Bottom line, Bush spoke from his heart & soul, Kerry gave his latest positions from a cheat sheet

I'm going with wireless PDA. A wifi equipped Palm or PocketPC would allow him to have his handlers put up notes or messages for him. The movements he makes, from what I see, are consistent with him pulling a PDA from his pocket, turning it on, and placing it on the lectern.

We have a winner.

Wonder if it was tapped into the University network....would there be records in the server....?

No, it would not be tapped into any server. He'd be using either wifi or bluetooth to communicate with a notebook or another PDA. Using WEP the communications would be encrypted so that no one would be able to read what they were saying to each other. If I had been in the audience with my PocketPC, I would have detected. While sitting a waiting I would have pulled my PocketPC out and checked out what wifi and bluetooth was active in the area. It's something I do if I ever have to wait somewhere. You never know when you're going to find an open WAP and be able to surf the web while waiting. Gotta get to FreeRepublic any chance I can get. I might have caught their network in my quick search.

Great enhancement. Not only did he pull something out of his pocket, but he manipulated it. i.e. opened, unfolded, etc. I'm thinking small pda or list of questions.

I also noticed while Leher was asking the very first question, kerry kept looking at something on his podium.

And, it just occured to me the business about the lights was a smoke screen. Everyone was paying attention to lights, not cheat sheets.

From what I've seen I strongly doubt it was any kind of handheld device. It was either 5x7 note cards which were shuffled or regular letter size paper unfolded from quarters.

It was the list of all his new positions on Iraq and Michael Moore-onics. Remember he'd only just assembled his new debate positions the week before after focus grouping at NYU.

I doubt it as my understanding is that all cellularbands and unlicensed spectrum is jammed near the president. As a possible president, my understanding is also the case for jamming around Kerry.

it's also too cute by half when all he needed were note cards to remind him of his latest positions on Iraq and all of Michael Moore's best jabs.

You're right. You wanna do your best to get photos of your opponent looking up at you while trying to make eye contact.

it just occured to me the business about the lights was a smoke screen. Everyone was paying attention to lights, not cheat sheets.

I just finished watching the debate from C-span.org and that's what I thought too. But to go further since he had paper already there no one needed to know when he did his notes. By the end of the debate Bush had written several pages he shuffled while Kerry talked. Also the last 2 minutes of Bush's closing were there camera's on Kerry? I noticed on C-span.org the camera was on Bush the whole 2 minutes.

He had many opportunities to clean up.

Previously some one mentioned that handlers came out and cleaned the Kerry podium quickly.

If they did I don't know if it would have mattered. There were tablets and pen placed by staff so it wouldn't matter what they took away. It could have appeared as though it was the notes Kerry was taking during the debate.

As I viewed the beginning over and over. It seemed Kerry'a eyes checked whatever he had just put down during Lehrer's reading of the first question.
