Royal Dutch/Shell Group and Sempra Energy received permits from Mexico for construction of a $600-million liquefied natural gas terminal to process gas from Russia for sale locally and in California.
The companies plan to build a re-gasification plant in Baja California on the Mexican Pacific Coast to treat natural gas brought in from Russia.

Good for Mexico. I guess they could not get the permits to build the plant in Alta California, or maybe land was too expensive.

I'm sure it's easier for them to get permis in Mexico than California. There was an attempt a year or two ago to get a LNG terminal built on Mare Island, Vallejo, but a vocal group of locals got that shot down. I don't recall what company was trying to get this built.
California is heavily dependent on natural gas - a high percentage of electric plants are fired by natural gas, many homes (including mine, along with cooking) use natural gas for heating. Natural gas has many industrial applications. And yet, it's very difficult, if not impossible, to build the facilities necessary to distribute it.

The envirals ran Calpine out of Eureka just 6 months ago. A "fact finding hearing" turned into a lynching of local officials...

"EPIC believes LNG is unsafe and unsustainable for any community, and that we should direct our resources towards finding long-term solutions for our energy needs. To this end, EPIC is sharing information we've accumulated with other communities where LNG proposals are looming, has joined a statewide coalition on these issues, and is also meeting with state and national organizations to form a larger strategy."GANG-GREEN!!!

"The burden on the public ... of such an award is outweighed by the significant public benefit achieved by the litigation." How much the state would have to pay was not immediately clear.
What Judicial RUBBISH!!! This is EXTEME RUBBISH, to understate it by a power of 10!!!

Why We're Glad LNG Is Not Part of Our Future
The Latest Reasons
April 1, 2004
LNG raises a broad-range of issues, including catastrophic safety concerns, damage to fisheries and other environmental effects, and serious negative impacts on the economy and quality of life. Here's the latest:
The Algerian Blast:An LNG explosion in Algeria shook the world on January 19, killing 27 people and shattering windows six miles away. A "scientific panel" -- with Calpine's "expert" Mr. Jim Lewis serving as its technical liaison -- told the world that LNG was not involved in this tragic event, but in April, a report was released proving that an LNG release was indeed responsible. Mobile Register, April 14, 2004.
Al Qaeda and LNG: "The nation's former deputy counterterrorism czar said yesterday that Al Qaeda operatives trained in Afghanistan came through Boston Harbor on liquid natural gas tankers from Algeria and that officials considered Boston a `logistical hub' for the terror network's activities in New England before the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001." Boston Globe, March 30, 2004.
Bush Steps In: The Port of Long Beach signed an "exclusive right" agreement with Mitsubishi in December 2003, and the company immediately began seeking approval from the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC). Now, over the objection of state agencies, FERC is claiming the Bush Administration "rather than California officials" has the say over the decision, saying it has the sole jurisdiction to decide whether the LNG plant is built.

Why is the Steelworkers union involved in this?
They succeded in ruining the American steel industry so now they have to find other industries to ruin.
