I think this is the only way this man is staying alive. If he refuses to cooperate with the terrorist, they have no use for him and kill him immediately. Since he is pleading for his life in the manner he is, they will keep him alive because he is useful for them.

You're on to something. No one has to die, if he can live.

"Be as cunning as serpents." If death is our only option, we must face it. But, if we can prolong our travail, however we must do it, something could happen to save us.

That said, Blair will not negotiate, and Bigley will likely die.

I know that I would already be dead were I in his place. I also don't believe for a minute that what he is saying is anything other than what his captors want him to say. He may agree or he may not, but to be sure, they are allowing him to "speak to the world" via this tape only because he is saying what they want him to say. If he said F*** Y**, you filthy Islamofascist swine, the only tape we would see is the one where his neck meets the knife. These monsters are the lowest form of life on the planet.

They are just toying with the guy.

They know that they are going to kill him.

They just want to humiliate him and his family first.

"How can this guy live with himself after this?"

I don`t think he has to worry about that.

Right. Bigley is just being used to further the terrorist cause of bending public opinion into appeasement.

And if there were vidio cameras back then, the station that aired this stuff would have been destroyed.

Once evil people are allowed to get their way by threatening one man or thousands, with death-the monsters will rule the world.

Death will eventually come to us all. Is buying one person twenty more years on this planet, worth sentencing civilization to death over?

As long as Bigley blubbers profusely in front of a video camera, he is useful to the terrorists.

what I mean is that we don't really know how people reacted to these kind of situations back then, we can't know. I think you're correct that honor and valor were much more important to people back then, and that the direction modern society has taken us is soft and emotional and lacking in lots of ways - But we really don't know how people behaved in these situations prior to our era. This man's captors, these terrorists in Iraq, could have run 100's of hours of tape on him, we don't know. We're not all warriors nor should we be. Men SHOULD be strong, but we ARE often been weak too. I honor the men who fight on my behalf in Iraq and Afghanistan, if I was 18 I hope I'd join up, but I and most Americans have never known this kind of treatment. Basically I'm mad at you for presuming to judge this man, perhaps you have seen and been where he is now, but even if you have I don't think you have the right to throw off-handed comments his way.

Yes, and it worked with Spain and the Phillipines from what I recall. This will continue as long as they see progress in changing public opinion. The peaceniks are fueling these beheadings and they don`t even know it. Pretty sick, isn`t it.

why do we have to play by marquis of queensbury rules, when everyone else (including the craven french and germans) can hit below the belt?

Where have you been?

It's called " PC ".

Ask any Liberal or DemoRat - or any alphabet news anchor.

We have to play fair 'cuz we are the bad guys from get go.

This is all the USA's fault anyway - we are always wrong.

BTW - who are you to question what .....

Oops, sorry - got side tracked for a minute.

I'm with ya. Falujah - Fajita - whatever - should have been reduced to dust 3 months ago.

If I had my way, Israel would have had unlimited defense credit with then USA about 10 years ago. They would have had the implicit "nod" to go take care of business. They would have had the entire mililtary of the USA as a backup.

That problem should have been solved years ago.

So we can then focus on "Hair Do" boy from North Korea and the ChiComs.

No, I'm betting the world would not like my version of "diplomacy".

But it sure would be a whole lot calmer these days.

I'm LVM - and I approved this message!

This will continue as long as they see progress in changing public opinion.

Beyond the phrase, "you cannot negotiate with terrorists", once every nation on the face of the earth moves down that path of appeasement, the terrorists will be able to run roughshod over whole nations at will. It's all part of the "job description" of the typical terrorist. Terrorize as many people as possible. This is what Blair and Bush understand.

"If Tony Blair or any other leader in this world was to surrender to the demands of evil people like the terrorists who have been beheading innocent civilians in Iraq, it would be sign of weakness that would only insure more acts of barbarism by these Satanic Extremist in the Muslim World."

Ain't it the truth?

The Euros are so extremely manipulated they'd react the same way if it was a beagle they were going to behead.

That's pure postmoderism deconstruction speaking: "You're not (poor, black, a woman, a man, an untouchable) whatever, so how can you judge them?!"

I have a sense of honor--that's enough to judge him.

We can sympathize with him and his family, but for the good of our side, I condemn his grovelling.

The arabs are a shame and honor based society--grovelling just gives them more reasons to kill more of us.

Yeah! That's right! That guys is a hero:

Foreign Minister Franco Frattini said in a Reuters interview about the lat minutes of life of Kuatrokki, "When the killers pointed the gun at his head, this man tried to take the hood off his head and exclaimed, "I will show you how an Italian dies! Then they killed him".

That's honorable.

We need a lot more guys like that to win this.

" That's pure postmoderism deconstruction speaking" really??? I don't think I deconstructed anything. All I said, and I appreciate you being defensive - is that
1. we (really I said 'you' but I'm being polite) have no real idea how people behaved back when William Wallace and his gallant army was being beaten by the English - the Sasanach, and
2. none of us have any idea how we're behave after sleep deprevation, torture and other stuff done to us if a camera was shoved in our face.
I hope I'd be a man about it but I don't know. and I don't know you from jack but I pretty certain you you don't know either.

I think we should give this man and his family a break. Almost certainly none of us have ever been in a situation that this man currently finds himself in - probably nothing even close. Who knows with certainty how he or she would react? Sure, like everyone else I would like to think that I would heroically just tell the those cowardly pieces of **** to go "screw a goat" and have my head sawed off and be done with it. However, I don't really know what I would do. I don't think anyone here else does either.

I think honor lies in having understanding for others weaknesses but rising above those weaknessess in oneself.

No, but living in a society that values honor makes it easier to do the right thing. We can always understand weakness, but lets not put it on the same level as honor.

Life is so good for us now, but we have to remember that there are worse things than death--just as there are worse things than war.

I just couldn't imagine living with myself after grovelling like that. I'd want to die anyhow, even if they freed me...

I think we should give this man and his family a break.

But where does that end? Without shaming dishonorable acts, there is no honor. We are going to have to stop giving people breaks if we are going to win this. If we are going to finally prevail.

If there is shame in the alternative, it makes it easier for you to do the right thing.
