past history/allow noncitizens to vote only in local elections. However, in state and national elections, voters must meet the state standards for voter registration.
Given the predicted close election this year and the 2000 election that was decided by a small number of votes… even the few aliens who do vote could make a difference in the results.

Detroit

Media source/Detroit Free Press
Date/Sept 27th
State/Michigan
City of County. /At least four Michigan counties have been alerted about attempts to add fraudulent, duplicative or otherwise phony names to the voter rolls.

# of suspect votes/
past history/Officials describe instances of pretty obvious fraud, produced, it would appear, by people motivated by money rather than the noble cause of engaging more citizens in democracy.

source of fraud: individual
and employee/voter registration drives, PIRGIM -- the Public Interest Research Group in Michigan -- and Project Vote

who is taking action against/Since the applications are -- and should be -- checked by local officials before any names are added to the Qualified Voter File, there is little chance any of this fraud would translate into actual votes affecting the Nov. 2 outcome.
