Oakland halts DUI checkpoints after Hispanic leaders complain

OAKLAND, Calif. The Oakland Police Department has halted its use of D-U-I checkpoints after the city's Hispanic leaders complained that the roadblocks were ensnaring too many illegal immigrants.

D-U-I checkpoints allow police officers to demand drivers' licenses and proof of insurance. City leaders agree the roadblocks are an effective way to get drunken drivers off the streets.

But Hispanic community leaders and City Council President Ignacio De La Fuente complained that the checkpoints were making life miserable for illegal immigrants who aren't licensed to drive but otherwise obey the law.

Police Chief Richard Word has ordered a month-long moratorium on the checkpoints while the department drafts new guidelines.

But City Councilmember Larry Reid says stopping the D-U-I checkpoints threatens public safety.

I just don't understand. Is there an alternate definition to illegal that I haven't came across? Wouldn't a city/county/state want to capture illegal immigrants? Especially CA where money is tight and illegal immigrants are major reason for it.

Maybe I should enroll at Berkley and let them inform about why stopping the DUI checkpoints makes sense for everyone.

J. Moonbeam Brown may be a left wingnut - however he is one of the few honest and trustworthy public trough feeders around.

I don't agree with him often but I do respect him.

City Council President Ignacio De La Fuente on the other hand is a classical case of "the problem". (if investigated would probably have cookie jar hands)

City Councilmember Larry Reid on the other hand seems to have his priorities right. I'm going to give his office a call in the AM and let them know he is appreciated.

Yo! Watch it! Our Alameda County Sheriff (that's one r and two f's) and his troops are far from sissies.

Sheriff Plummer is an astute law enforcement officer and knows his way around politically as well.

Our local OPD cops are great troops also.

Problem is they take their marching orders from voter sensitive public trough feeders.

And no badmouthing of SF cops either. The city may be off the charts - but the cops are cool and professional.

Could there not also be Racial Favoritism ?

I mean we all know the only human beings on earththat are racist are White Christian Males so don't that mean that any other color than white has favoritism on it's side ?
