Short TBA from Kfir Alfia of ProtestWarrior.com
Watch America 's rowdiest young filmmakers as they take to the streets against the lunatic left! See how un-peaceful ‘peace' marchers can be! Visit the Protest Warriors here.

From www.msnbc.msn.com:
...The Warriors organize rallies, street theater and marches. They carry video cameras to record their own version of events to bypass mainstream media outlets. And, of course, the members hold plenty of signs and slogans, which read like editorial cartoons from the National Review: PROTECT ISLAMIC PROPERTY RIGHTS AGAINST WESTERN IMPERIALISM declares a sign over a picture of a Muslim woman in a burqa with a leash around her neck tied to a pole. EXCEPT FOR ENDING SLAVERY, FASCISM, AND COMMUNISM, WAR HAS NEVER SOLVED ANYTHING, says another. The most provocative, perhaps, is a picture of a Palestinian woman with a T shirt on her burqa saying MY SON SUICIDE-BOMBED A BUS FULL OF ISRAELIS AND ALL I GOT WAS THIS LOUSY T-SHIRT; the small print underneath reads AND $25,000 FROM SADDAM. Alfia, who designed network chips for a Silicon Valley start-up before devoting himself full time to the group at its Austin, Texas, headquarters, founded it in March 2003 with his childhood friend Alan Lipton. According to Alfia, the organization is funded by merchandise sales from the Web site, the occasional $50 donation and out of “our own pocket.” So far, there are about 7,200 Protest Warriors across the United States. They've pulled off close to 80 missions to date, including Operation Bias Check (they snuck signs behind Matt Lauer’s head during NBC’s "Today" show that said: DON’T BELIEVE THE LIBERAL MEDIA) and Operation Eagle Strike, where the protesters crashed an antiwar demonstration hosted by the radical group ANSWER. This month, the Warriors are gearing up to greet the left on the streets of New York. NEWSWEEK’s Michael Hastings spoke to Alfia to get the battle plan for the Big Apple.

Courtesy protestwarrior.com
Cofounder Kfir Alfia

NEWSWEEK : What are your plans for New York? Are you going to be out with the other protesters on the West Side Highway?
Kfir Alfia: We’re going to do our standard march infiltration. We’re not there to drown their ideas out, or prevent them from expressing their message. We want them to express their message. The louder they express it, the more their agenda is going to be discounted. We are there to provide a countermessage, and to document their reaction to a different point of view. We do have other plans, but we’re keeping them close to our vests...

9:15 PM-
11:00 PM

Special Screening of Ronald Reagan classic Desperate Journey (1942)
Ronald Reagan and Errol Flynn battle the Nazis in this rousing World War II classic! The kind of movie Hollywood made when it supported a war effort. Rare Library of Congress print.

From, www.errolflynn.net/Filmography:

Desperate Journey

If you're looking for a rip roaring adventure with brave fighting men and lots of bad guys, then this movie's for you. This adrenaline-pumping piece of propaganda directed by Raoul Walsh with music by Max Steiner is guaranteed to Please!

An international crew on a bombing run for the RAF crash behind enemy lines. They escape their Nazi captors and make their way west by whatever means possible. Our heroes leave in their wake a path of destruction as they make their way back to allied territory, much to the frustration of the pursuing Germans. Their vitality appears unlimited, and even in the end they seem ready to hit the Pacific after a quick mend and a hearty steak dinner.

No, the movie certainly isn't dull. The likelihood of such a pursuit going even half the distance is a bit far-fetched, but that's okay. Watching such a small group of individuals cause so much damage can be great fun, particulary in wartime when it was first released.

The supporting cast was already familiar to Flynn fans: Alan Hale & Ronald Reagan are the Americans of the unit, and Arthur Kennedy (who was with the good guys this time around following his role as Sharp in THEY DIED WITH THEIR BOOTS ON) is the token Canadian. Raymond Massey gets to play the bad guy once more, sputtering Major Baumeister. Add a pretty girl to represent the civilians in those softer moments (Nancy Coleman), and you've got a little something for everyone.

One of the nicer touches of this film is the realistic use of language. German is spoken when it should be and English likewise; either you and the characters in the scene understand what is said or you don't (and those of us unfamiliar with German often catch the gist just the same). That the language barrier serves as an advantage to some and a disadvantage to others is one of the things that make the movie particularly interesting.

During the filming of DESPERATE JOURNEY, Errol Flynn - who had by then become a US citizen - attempted to enlist in the military. He was given not only a 4F rating as when he tried to sign on with the UK as did his British friends during the late 1930s, but was diagnosed with tuberculosis and a bad heart. He even used his acquaintance with Eleanor Roosevelt to bend the rules a little but to no avail. And it didn't help matters when his ill health was covered up while the press and his public criticised the star for playing hero in the movies rather than do his part in real life.

DESPERATE JOURNEY is the first of two films in which Errol Flynn actually plays an Australian, which is what he was (Warner PR spread the word that Flynn was Irish in an effort to tone down a wild history. Then again, nobody has yet to either confirm or deny whether he was in fact the inspiration for their Looney Tunes' cartoon creation The Tasmanian Devil [aka Taz]). It is amusing to watch Flynn try to effect a mild Aussie inflection in places, but he eventually gives up and sounds like he usually does.

Desperate Journey is available from MGM/UA Home Video and the perfect thing to watch on a rainy afternoon. Or anytime for that matter!

During the 1950s Hollywood saw the rise of monumental motion pictures like never before. Huge numbers of extras were employed on the sets of the film studios for the money shots that give movies their credibility and awe. Shot in Technicolor, these films hard dazzling colors and hues, sure to complete flabbergast every moviegoer. One of the films of the era was “The Ten Commandments”, a 4-hour epos by Cecil B. DeMille, one of Hollywood’s most prestigious filmmakers at the time, featuring an endless array of Hollywood stars and a story of truly biblical proportions.
It is with an enormous amount of pride that Paramount Home Video has now released

Giving away a son

the ultimate version of “The Ten Commandments” on DVD in a 2-disc set that restores the full glory of this memorable film.

“The Ten Commandments” follows the life story of Moses, as it is told in the Bible. After Pharaoh ordered all first born sons of each Hebrew family to be killed in order to avoid the fulfulling of a prophecy, Moses’ mother puts the infant in a cradle and sets it free to float downstream, hoping the boy would escape certain death that way. Incidentally, Princess Bithiah (Nina Foch) detects the cradle on the river and immediately embraces the baby as their own for the lack of an own heir, keeping its origin a secret. Over the next 30 years, Moses (Charlton Heston) is raised in the royal Egyptian palace and is in a constant struggle with his

Moses and Rameses

brother Rameses (Yul Brynner) for the throne. Pharaoh is more and more favoring the active Moses over the zealous Rameses, because Moses is very charismatic and uses his powers to make the country’s slaves content. One day, Rameses finds out the truth about Moses’ past and reveals it for everyone to see, claiming Moses is the deliverer, the one who will according to the prophecies lead all slaves into freedom, bringing the Egyptian empire to a fall. Pharaoh Sethi (Sir Cedric Hardwicke) renounces all of Moses’ rights and leaves it to Rameses to determine his fate. In an abominable move, Rameses decides to leave Moses on his own in the desert, hoping he would die and forever forgotten.

Moses crosses the desert all the way to Israel however, and becomes part of a group of nomads. The fact that he survived the strains of the desert is indication to him that there is a God at work. When he gets to Mount Sinai, the mountain where God is supposedly living, he decides to climb the steep slopes of the rugged mountain to face his maker and ask him for deliverance of his people. But God has other plans. God makes Moses indeed the deliverer and sends him back to Egypt to deliver the Hebrew people and lead them out of slavery. But first, Moses has to face Rameses to convince him to set the thousands of slaves free.

Everything about “The Ten Commandments” is big. The settings are gigantic, the story is epic, the characters are larger than life, and so are the gestures. The film exhibits a great deal of theatrical and melodramatic acting, and grand postures, but in the entire context and feel of the film, this is not even a bad thing. “The Ten Commandments” is beautifully produced and choreographed. It is impressive at the very least and almost overwhelming at many times. In his money shots, DeMille is staging over 12,000 extras and 15,000 animals, and especially the exodus scene when Moses is leading the Hebrew to freedom, is incomparable to anything seen ever since, as is the chariot

Epic settings

scene of Rameses chasing the trail of freed slaves. The ultimate highlight of the film despite these orgiastic crowd scenes is nevertheless Moses’ parting of the Red Sea. Despite its age, this is a truly timeless special effect sequence that is as captivating as it was over 40 years ago, just like the presentation of the deadly plagues Egypt finds itself ridden by, and of course the delivery of the Ten Commandments by God’s striking finger.

Into the desert

Despite its magnitude and splendor, the film is extremely powerful in its narrative however. It is a solid story, based on a script that that leaves nothing to be desired. Perfectly cast with some of the industry’s superstars of the time, the movie weaves magic like only few do. Charlton Heston is once again the soulful protagonist, as he was in numerous films at the time, while Yul Brynner is giving an exhilarating performance as his half-brother Rameses. The two are like fire and water, two opposites, and yet both are powerful actors that manage to have an electrifying onscreen presence throughout, but especially when paired up in scenes. The list of

actors and actresses is too long to go into detail here, but they all help immensely to make “The Ten Commandments” the achievement it has come to be. Lavishly fitted out with elaborate and colorful costumes and decorations, they all help conjuring up vivid images of a time long gone.

About 10 years ago, Paramount has done a major restoration of “The Ten Commandments” which is evident on this release of the film on DVD. It is presented in a 2.20:1 widescreen aspect ratio on this DVD, that is enhanced for widescreen TVs and the sharpness if the picture is simply staggering. The image is clean and mostly free of any artifacts as a result of the film’s considerable age. The picture is rich, with plenty of detail, also restoring the complete glory of the movie’s Technicolor process. The colors are vibrant and strong, creating seas of colors and hues in the many crowd scenes. No color bleeding or chroma noise is evident there, and the compression of the film transfer

Talking to God

has been done as meticulously as the original restoration. There is not a hint of a digital artifact visible anywhere on this release and I have never seen the film look so good before! This disc is a shining example, how DVD can literally help preserve movies for all time to come.

The parting of the Red Sea

With the movie’s restoration, Paramount created a new sound mix of “The Ten Commandments”, which is presented on this release in a full 5.1 channel Dolby Digital audio track. The track has been cleaned up and as such there is hardly any noise or hiss evident. Only in very delicate passages the original sound is overlayed with an ever so slight hiss, which is technically unavoidable, and as a matter of fact hardly noticeable either. The mix itself is majestic, revealing a wide mix across the front speakers for Elmer Bernstein’s phenomenal orchestral score. Due to the age of the film, the sonic spectrum of the dialogue is a bit limited however and sounds thin

throughout. In a few scenes you will notice a bass extension for the subwoofer, and some surround effects for ambience, but for the most part these channels are used quite sparingly and mostly to enhance the soundfield in specific scenes rather than across the board.

This DVD release of “The Ten Commandments” also contains three trailers for the movie, and it is interesting how they have changed over time, focusing on completely aspects of the film. The first one from 1956 is the most exhaustive one, running for

Destruction
The Ten Commandments

several minutes. It features Cecil B. DeMille himself, telling the story and background of the story, introducing all the main actors of his film. It is a very interesting trailer, nicely complemented by others from 1966 and 1989.

Although I believe probably everyone has seen this film before, there can be no doubt that this DVD will nevertheless make you fell like you experience the film for the first time. The outstanding picture and sound quality of this release makes this 2-disc set a must-have for every DVD owner.

Wish I could be there. It's been a long time since I lived in LA or Anaheim. Hope the 'freepers' are there to fend off any protests, as well. You have to expect some.

It looks like a quality venue. Not much time for the Pier or Venice Beach or the rock and blues clubs on 'the strip', and whatever else. One thing I expect hasn't changed - bumper to bumper gridlock on the freeway into the 'valley', or in Orange County.

"A brilliant effort...extremely well done." - Rush Limbaugh - The Rush Limbaugh Show

“ A powerful portrayal of a critical point in history that exposes the intensity of the struggle against communism and President Reagan’s campaign for victory. As someone who had lived these times, I was very moved by the detail and emotion in which they were brought out on film. The lessons of our struggle against the evil empire are more relevant than ever in regards to the conflict of today’s world.” - Lech Walesa - Nobel Laurite and former President of Poland

“This brilliantly-crafted film not only details how Ronald Reagan’s vision and uncompromising courage secured the future of the United States by ending Soviet Communism, it also reveals the heart and soul of a great man and his faith in God, the American people and our way of life. On many levels, the message of this picture moved me as an American and as a patriot, as ‘The Passion of Christ’ moved me as a Christian.” Senator Rick Santorum - Pennsylvania - Chairman of The Republican Conference

These shorts, with the theme of anti-terrorism and anti-violence, are part of a two-part program created by noted Kurdish/Iraqi filmmaker Jano Rosebiani's Evini Films to train young Iraqis to express themselves artistically through cinema. The program takes 20 young Kurds and 20 young Iraqis, pairs them with film professionals in hands-on training, and then screens their short films throughout Iraq.  Cinema production and exhibition were virtually banned in Iraq for thirty years under Saddam Hussein - this program is the first to rejuvenate filmmaking in a free Iraq.

jiyan.jpgAs part of the "Voices of Iraqi Freedom" presentation, we will also screen Jano Rosebiani's narrative feature "Jiyan" (93 mins., 2003).  "Jiyan" is a moving, life-affirming story of a little orphan girl befriended by a Kurdish-American man helping to rebuild her home town in the wake of Saddam Hussein's chemical attacks of the late 1980s.

"Cochise County, USA: Cries From the Border" - World Premiere! (117 mins., 2005)
Inspired by her own experiences living along the US-Mexico border, Arizona resident Mercedes Maharis documents the national tragedy of illegal immigration as experienced by the residents of Cochise County, Arizona. The county has only 130,000 residents, yet was the crossing point for more than 235,000 illegal immigrants in 2004. The movie documents the toll this takes on the local community, the environment, and on the immigrants themselves.  Featuring interviews with Cochise County residents & officials, Border Patrol officials, pacifists, civil rights activists, and illegal immigrants. It also features extraordinary footage of actual border crossings. The film argues for a fair and humane solution to this human tragedy. living.jpg 6:45PM "We The Living" (174 mins., 1942)
As our "100th Birthday Tribute to Ayn Rand," we'll be screening the 1942 Italian classic We The Living, based on Ayn Rand's novel of the same name. The film stars Alida Valli and Rossano Brazzi as young lovers in post-revolutionary Russia who must choose between conformity with the Communist Party, or the dictates of their own hearts. Mussolini banned the film for its anti-totalitarian message, and attempted to destroy all existing prints. Thought lost for many years, the film negative was rediscovered in the 1960s by Hank and Erika Holzer and restored, with Ayn Rand's guidance. Rarely seen, this film classic combines philosophy and art in a work of compelling drama (B & W, with subtitles). Directed by Goffredo Alessandrini, the film's restoration was produced by Duncan Scott and Hank & Erika Holzer.

Special introductions by producer Duncan Scott, and by Jeff Britting of the Ayn Rand Institute. There will also be a 10 minute intermission during the film.

10:15PM Festival Conclusion and Thanks.
