CBS Nixes '60 Minutes' Story on Iraq War

NEW YORK (AP) -- CBS News has shelved a ``60 Minutes'' report on the rationale for war in Iraq because it would be ``inappropriate'' to air it so close to the presidential election, the network said on Saturday.

The report on weapons of mass destruction was set to air on Sept. 8 but was put off in favor of a story on President Bush's National Guard service. The Guard story was discredited because it relied on documents impugning Bush's service that were apparently fake.

CBS News spokeswoman Kelli Edwards would not elaborate on why the timing of the Iraq report was considered inappropriate.

The report, with Ed Bradley as the correspondent, has long been in the works. Originally scheduled for June, it was first put off because of new developments, Edwards said.

CBS said no other reports on the presidential election have been affected.

The network last week appointed former U.S. Attorney General Dick Thornburgh and retired Associated Press chief executive Louis Boccardi to investigate what went wrong with the National Guard report and recommend changes.

The controversy has put CBS News officials squarely on the fire line, particularly anchor Dan Rather, who narrated the National Guard report.

Meanwhile, the network announced that Rather would anchor the network's coverage of all three presidential debates, starting Sept. 30.

CBS has made it nearly impossible for the media to go negative on Bush before the election. Thanks Dan!

LOL!!! Oh, NOW cbs discovers some scruples ...

Would that it were the truth. Unfortunately it isn't. Witness that they are letting a known liar (and he is a liar as he continues to pretend the forged documents might not be fakes)put his face front and center after he has been exposed as a person who lets his bias determine his reporting.

Furthermore he should have absolutely nothing to say and do with the election and the news of the election until after it is over. Surely CBS has someone less controversial and whose bias is less demonstrated, (is John Stossel a CBSer?), who can cover the debates.

It is an outrage to the intelligence of any thinking person that Dan Rather continues to diddle in this election.

"...but you have to forgive CBS-- they're still distracted by the pinch of their teat caught in that wringer...."

I don't have any reason to forgive CBS diddly, let them fry in the oil that they heated up. I'd like them well done, please.

They still don't get it. No one will watch him. CBS discredits itself more each day by failing to take appropriate action. Certainly there is enough out there for a suspension with pay--at a minimum--pending completion of the so-called investigation. Even my lib friends agree on this.

Stick a fork in CBS.

Doesn't matter. All 10 of their remaining viewers will be voting for Kerry anyway.

That's easy. They did opinion polls and discovered that it wouldn't be very harmful to President Bush.

Airing a story that accused Bush of using forged documents would be an unmitigated disaster for CBS.

Particularly as (I believe this is accurate), Bush or his administration suspected that the documents were forged, and therefore did NOT rely on their contents in their decision making. Unlike CBS, who didn't catch the forgery before it reported their contents as factually accurate, having no independent corroboration.

ie., after they got their butt handed back to them over Rathergate.

So Rather will be reporting for CBS how Kerry "really mopped the floor" with President Bush during all the debates? Great idea, CBS - - that should really help you with your little credibility problem.

Perhaps they figured the Iraq story wasn't as damaging to as the ANG story? I mean, why shelf one cause of election, but run with other???

Earlier reports on this pending story sounded like their documents were again in question...

Maybe they noticed their documents were scrawled with one of those big, fat kindergarten sized crayons. Normally it would have been OK, but with the increased scrutiny...

When 911 happened the MSM appeared to care. This is nothing more than the same. Only now we can probably conclude that the story was junk to begin with and because of a FR induced "light of day leak", had to be scrapped.

CBS will make whatever excuse it wants, including "the story is too close to an election", which by the way is an admission of a pending violation. Because in effect, they are admitting it is a polical ad disguised as journalism.

Did FR have a hand in exposing them? YES. Should we believe defeat of the left wing stanglehold on the MSM is upon us? no. no. no. and no.

Groupthink is a powerful tool! If I or we were groupthinkers, I would expect FR to dump me from the forum for disagreeing with y'all. It is because we as conservatives disagree and debate that we hold the title of FreeThinker, which is the antithesis of Groupthink.

Conversely, our friends on the left, congeal around a common opinion regardless of fact or reason. No story has made this point better than the recent TANG episode. The charlatans on the left, in an attempt to give their constituency some glimmer of hope that they still have credibility, laid pipeline after pipeline of mindless mental outs.

Perfect example1: Buckhead is a Republican.
Perfect example2: Partisan hacks in pajamas

So what?! How does that change the fact that the CBS story is founded on a lie? It doesn't of course, but one of the key disfunctional behaviors of groupthink is self censorship followed by closely by ostracizeation for believing differently than the group.

In this light, all you need to do is establish irrelavent thought pipelines leading your dupe away from your own guilt to a place of superiority (a happy place *elitism*).

Hence, the rapid Kookification (discredit) approach. They say people on the Right are kooks, therefor the Right are not to be taken seriously. Therefor, whatever facts lay before you, do not trouble yourself with. The group believes THIS afterall. If you do not agree with us, then we will simply have to not like you anymore.

..and this is enough to persuade most people. Which is why the left keeps defying reason and publishing these diversionary thought taps.

Sad. Sad. Sad.

CBS News spokeswoman Kelli Edwards would not elaborate on why the timing of the Iraq report was considered inappropriate.

Clearly because the content was misleading if not outright false and at this time of intense scrutiny that would soon be apparent to all and CBS could not withstand it.

It was going to be about the forged Niger documents.
