...Today is Yom Kippur and they may not be aware of just how close and dangerous this beast is...I'm not familiar with the Jewish faith at all. Why wouldn't they know about the hurricane?

Yom Kippur, day of atonement, is the holiest of the Jewish holy days. They do not use "modern" conveniences today such as radio or television and may not be aware of the latest forecast, as they started observance at sundown last night and continue until sundown this evening.
