SEOUL — North Korea threatened Thursday to turn Japan into a "nuclear sea of fire" if the United States attacks it with nuclear weapons, South Korea's Yonhap News Agency reported, quoting a North Korean newspaper report.

Rodong Sinmun, the newspaper of North Korea's Workers Party of Korea, said U.S. military bases in Japan would come under its attack in the event of a nuclear war.

"If the United States ignites a nuclear war, the U.S. military bases in Japan would serve as a detonating fuse to turn Japan into a nuclear sea of fire," the paper said in an article, according to Yonhap. .......... (snip)

"Attacking a nuclear-armed adversary is sheer madness."

Interesting what that means for the Islamic / Arabic states attacking Israel, hmmmm. Could your belief be wrong?

If North Korea has the capability and the means to liquify Honolulu and Anchorage (or even Tokyo, for that matter), then no US President is ever going to seek an "Authorization of Force" or "Declaration of War" against them. And if North Korea succeeds in extending the range of their IRBMs (or, if they already have) to include Seattle, Portland, Frisco, and LA, that only cements the facts of the case. We ain't God, and we ain't Superman. No US President will ever seek an "Authorization of Force" or "Declaration of War" against a Nuclear-Armed Adversary. Atomic Weapons and the Means to deliver them are the international, universal Ace Card.

Isn't this what preemption is all about...to deal with imminent or gathering threats? Let's just say imminent in this case.

Third story down on Yomiuri on line is one that starts this way:

North Korean Missile Launch Foreshadowed,
U.S. SecState Warns

(New York, Hishinuma Takeo) At a news conference in New York on Sep. 23, Secretary of State Powell said with regard to indications of an impending launch of a ballistic missile by North Korea, “There are indications of activity, but it’s not certain where the missile is aimed.”

(snip)

(Yomiuri Shimbun) September 24, 2212

Ah, here's Nikkei Keizai Shimbun

North Korea Says, If US Starts Nuclear War, Tokyo Will Be Sea of Fire

North Korea’s Labor Party newspaper “The Labor Newspaper” said in an article published on the 23rd, “Japan is the most important base in the US’s military strategy with regard to North Korea and Asia. If the US starts a nuclear war, US military bases in Japan would become a huge time bomb threatening our survival, unavoidably becoming the lighted fuse that would turn Japan into a nuclear sea if fire.” This is posted on a web site operated by North Korea, Waga Minzoku Doushi. (Don’t search for it. That’s a transliteration of Chinese characters.)

On the eve of the Japan Korean working-level talks on abductions of Japanese citizens by North Korea scheduled to open in Beijing on the 25th, it is possible that this “sea of fire” statement may have widening repercussions. However, as part of its strategy for clarifying what actually happened in the abductions, Japan is seen not to be backing down from its hard-line stance toward North Korea.

In March 1994, when the working-level talks between the North and the South on the North Korean nuclear issue broke down, the head of the North Korean delegation threatened, “If South Korea starts a war, we will turn Seoul into a sea of fire,” so this isn’t the first time they’ve said such a thing. (23:03)

Sorry for the quality of the translation. It's 2 in the morning here, and I just hammered it out any old how. Didn't even check official English names of Korean stuff.

Well, I am sure Japan is impressed with Clinton's foreign policy and diplomatic "successes" regarding N. Korea -- the same ones Kerry wants to continue: wait until rogue nations get nukes and WMD, instead of pre-empting them, before they become an imminent danger to the world.

Ummm... Apolgies for interloping, but the Arabic states DO kind of fit my definition of "sheer madness".

"Atomic Weapons and the Means to deliver them are the international, universal Ace Card."

Just as atomic weapons were unheard of before being used, we have to have more recent developments that haven't been utilized and they are probably instruments of destruction that have built in cover so none the wiser would the world be if and when they are used. I have no doubt that we have newer universal aces to outdo the NK.

Kim Jong-Il is perfectly happy to be absolute dictator over his own little personal abbatoir.

If it were just that I would probably agree you were correct. But can we guarantee that Kim will not export nuclear technology to terrorists or other rogue nations?

If we cannot guarantee that then Kim must go no matter the cost.

Ahh... Ok. Then this is just the standard negotiating strategy of N. Korea (and seems to be a widespread Asian strategy). "Talk softly and carry a big stick" isn't the way they approach negotiation.

no authorization will be sought.
should it come down to dealing 'aces', we will.

N. Korea is one of the axis members... by name, and will be dismantled. One way or another. They can always comply as an alternative to the big fry.

yup.
we got it.
they know it.

When the shuttle went down, I was concerned that China had gotten it from clintong, and used it against us on an overflight.

But they tell us that they are pretty sure, it was the foam that did the damage. So, I feel better about it.

Does china have any satellite program compared to ours?

Good Gravy Gordo. Another little pompous country (think France). Like some dork with little man's disease. The US could completely glass Korea and they wouldn't even know it's coming until it's over. We know when they blow their noses.

It's like they're screaming "look at me, Daddy!!" One of these days Daddy is gonna spank them. Just for being stupid.

There are some things that the United States can't do. Attacking a Nuclear-Armed Adversary is one of them.

Not entirely true; can't is not the proper word. Won't is more like it. Our preemptive attack could be over in 15 minutes and they'd never get a missile off the ground. But the civilian casualties caused by our need to take out every possible (even if not confirmed) storage and launch site would be too horrific to contemplate.

With sufficient intelligence we could pull it off with pinpoint targeting, but depending upon intel is risky business.

"before we spent $200 billion on a War"

BZZZZT!

Even "Night Line" recently confirmed that the true figure is "only" about 125 billion.

Details, details, ...

One thing we should not do -- hold any more "talks" with the illegal regime in Pyongyang. The US needs to get a UN resolution NOW, and impose a blockade with or without it. No more "humanitarian" items should be allowed in. The only thing that will improve the lives of the survivors of the Pyongyang regime will be the removal of that regime.
George W. Bush will be reelected by a margin of at least ten per cent
