"Oh, yes," she said when she received her first retirement check from the military which augmented her income she earned from "military paid" college in years past.

She'd get retirement checks after serving for just 2 years? Is that even long enough for the GI Bill and College Fund benefits? If so, somebody's not handling the checkbook very wisely.
