My guess, drug use, a rape or something else was going to be dropping over the next few weeks. Just a theory, but makes you wonder. Because was CBS came out with on Sept 8th, wasn't a big deal if even true. Most of it was already known or suspected by almost everyone. Where was the story?

That analysis from manchuriancandidate2004 is very interesting. Otherwise the whole forged document caper seems stupid--why take such risks over a story that most of the country doesn't care about (the details of Bush's National Guard service)? Then again, the Nixon people made the same mistake--sending wiretappers in to bug the DNC when Nixon had the election in the bag already (given that McGovern would be the Democratic nominee).

The situations are similar in that the risks greatly outweigh any potential gain (since the Kerry campaign pre-forgeries did not have the upper hand the way the Nixon campaign did).

David Gergen said something on Hardball about how the media was very careful with the Kitty Kelley story after Rathergate broke. It's something we all figured out (it's gotten relatively little coverage, and even Chris Matthews reamed her for her lack of sourcing) but it was good to see it confirmed.
