Could it be possible that Lockhart wrote the "fake memos" and handed them to Bill Burkett and Burkett to Rather?

It*s going to be fun watching the RATS roll over on their own. When they realize that they could be facing criminal charges, they will start eating their own. Stay tuned....

AT-LARGE FREEPER ASSIGNMENT: We need folks to start plugging in combinations of operative/media names like Bob Slater, Van Os, Burkett, Mapes, Lockhart, & other key players to see what combination pops up on Google searches.

I suppose that Mapes contacting Lockhart is just one of the many ways in which CBS practices journalism "without fear or favoritism". . .

keep in mind the are the same people who said it would be unethical to tell US soldiers of an ambush if they found out in advance. (the have to be neutral observers they claim)
If Mapes called lockart to advise him of a "silver bullet" it will be impossible for CBS to recover or even participate in the presidential coverage.

[At the behest of CBS, an adviser to John Kerry said he talked to a central figure in the controversy over President Bush's National Guard service shortly before disputed documents were released...Joe Lockhart...the second Kerry ally to confirm contact with retired Texas National Guard officer Bill Burkett, said he made the call at the suggestion of CBS producer Mary Mapes.]
Looks more and more that the Kerry campaign AND CBS were duped!

Stunned does not begin to describe my concern over this.
This is one of the most flagrant violation of journalistic ethics there could be when it comes to politics.

We are supposed to believe:
1. The Kerry campaign decided to run with the "Privileged Son" attack, claiming Bush did not live up to his national guard commitment and was given privileged treatment.
2. The Kerry campaign gets a call claiming that there are memos that confirm the attack, which they happened to come up with at the same time the memos appeared.
3. Both the Kerry campaign and DNC's opposition research had no interest in the memos.
Who is stupid enough to believe that?
Joe

"Lockhart said Mapes asked him the weekend before the story broke to call Burkett. "She basically said there's a guy who is being helpful on the story who wants to talk to you," Lockhart said, adding that it was common knowledge that CBS was working on a story raising questions about Bush's Guard service. Mapes told him there were some records "that might move the story forward. She didn't tell me what they said."
God I can hardly wait to hear the ending........
