I think you're correct that to spot proportional spacing is not the mark of great technical acumen. However, it doesn't seem too much of an issue if you owned a PC before 1984. Men used to do strange things in the old days. Everybody wanted a $7000 Wang but a "normal guy" like me would own a Kaypro and use WordStar and spend hours to copy a pathetic prop spacing patch into 3.3 so he could control the universe, impress women, and kept faith with the CP/M operating system. OK, things didn't work out, but lots of people wanted attributes like kerning and proportional spacing and they weren't around in the Z80-type world at the time. It is not a big deal to spot these matters if you got into PC's soon after 1979.

That's true, when I started reading the post started by Buckhead (hours later) I even noticed the "exactly centered" headings with my naked eye. I have to admit though, that I would have never looked until someone mentioned they were possibly a fraud. As much as I think CBS is biased, at the time I never imagined they would stoop to the level of fraud.
