What's interesting is that the Times felt it necessary to "out him", which apparently involved quite a bit of time. Who he is isn't even relevant to the story. At most, it's an interesting fact.

I guess that in mindset of the Times, the fact that he's a conservative is a damning relevation, and they hope to ruin his career.

In fact, it will help it.

Yeah. They go through all this trouble to "out" BuckHead as a conservative activist, even though everyone knows he's an active Freeper. Truly spectacular "investigative" journalism, isn't it?
