Dan Rather and CBS News on Wednesday night came up with what looks like their final defense of the use of probably forged documents to discredit President Bush's service in the National Guard. Rather said that the controversial documents may be "re-creations" of actual documents that he doesn't have!
The latest turn in the scandal is a clever ploy and shell game on the part of Rather and it may buy him some time. He's trying to convince the publicand his colleagues in the pressthat the real issue isn't whether the documents are fakes but whether they convey the truth about Bush.
As a result of this new twist, the critics of CBS News who have been waiting for a Rather apology or firing may have to wait even longerperhaps in vain. The ambiguous White House response to the documentsby refusing to denounce them and in fact providing them to news organizationshas enabled CBS News to put forward this dubious defense of what is clearly questionable conduct by a major news organization.
By any reasonable standard, CBS News failed to properly investigate the story before putting it on the air. In the week that has passed since the story aired, CBS News has been desperately trying to find various "experts" to add some weight or credibility to its objectionable conduct and conclusions.

"re-creations" of actual documents = forgeries
RATHER EMBARRASSING
"The truth of the matter, of course, is
We rely on anonymous sources,
On political hacks,
Certifiable quacks,
And extraterrestrial forces."

The longer this goes on, the more it appears that Rather is going to survive. What a wonderful opportunity is slipping away...
In a related development, OJ Simpson has announced he will join in the search for the original documents.
Here's a theory ...
Suppose Hillary promised Rather that he'd get to be the
annointed boy to break the big "October Surprise" she's
been saving?
He could hardly do that if he gets his butt fired in Sept.
So, gotta tough it out.
(Not that Hillary wants Kerry to win.
She just wants a narrow messy loss.)
"Gunga Dan" will soon have a new paradigm - "Bullet Dodger", as it is obvious to all that he has dodged this bullet.
But watch out for the ricochet and possible shrapnel burst. CBS was standing back there in the line of fire....
There is one thing that this entire Memogate scandal tells me. The Kerry organization has run out of ammo! If that were not the case, this would never have taken place. Why throw pretend mud if you have the real thing?
Question: why does the author use the word "probably" in the first sentence?
..and Dan Rather is "probably" the "recreation" of something else (God knows what, journalist doesn't fit).
Recreations - kind of like when they fired a rocket at a pickup truck to make it explode during a "live test" showing us all the dangers... As I recall, there was a huge flap over the agency that did that and this is much worse - the fate of our country is at stake.
I have been expecting to see a flood of "recreated" documents about Kerry truths from Freepers.
I haven't had time, but I think if the CBS logic prevails, we owe everyone a month and a half of documents proving: well, anything you want!
I'm gonna have some fun!
You should go back & look at the Watergate timeline. It took months. This is happening at warp speed due to the influence of the internet where time moves very quickly.
What amazes me is that even Fox has not hammered Rather on saying these may be "re-creations".
In most endeavors, there is a long mating ritual before anyone actually gets screwed.
Do you think I would get in trouble if I bought a new Corvette with a stack of "re-creations" of $100 bills?
Or "recreated" paychecks. Then I could argue, but your Honor, if these were real that would be the amount I would get.
The are fake but accurate!!
Hahahaha, laugh a minute with Dems...idiots
and I got the names, dates, and the addresses right...
doesn't that make it OK?
hahaha
What I call defining down clever. It is an artless, stupid, pointless defense. If true (which it is not) it would not be a useful defense.
