Kerry Questioned About His 'Chinese Assault Rifle'

CNSNews.com) - Does Sen. John F. Kerry really own a "Communist Chinese assault rifle," as he suggested in an interview in the latest edition of Outdoor Life magazine?

The Second Amendment Foundation says if the senator does own such a rifle, it wants to know where Kerry keeps it, if it is legally registered, and how he got it into the United States.

"Senator Kerry's own words once again trip him up in an apparent hypocrisy," SAF Founder Alan Gottlieb said in a press release.

"Responding to a question from Outdoor Life about whether he is a gun owner, and if so, what's his favorite gun, Kerry strongly intimates he has an assault rifle, which is illegal to own both in Massachusetts and Washington, D.C."

The Kerry quote appears on Page 82 of the October issue of Outdoor Life. He told the magazine, "My favorite gun is the M-16 that saved my life and that of my crew in Vietnam. I don't own one of those now, but one of my reminders of my service is a Communist Chinese assault rifle."

Gottlieb called it another example of Kerry running on his Vietnam service history: "Now he's talking as if he's got an assault rifle stashed somewhere, while he's been railing against their ownership by other law-abiding American citizens," Gottlieb added.

Kerry supported an extension of the so-called assault weapons ban, which expired on Monday. Last week, at a campaign stop in St. Louis, he said, "As a hunter, I have never ever thought about going hunting with an AK-47 or an Uzi or anything else."

"Senator Kerry, where's the rifle?" Gottlieb asked. "In which one of your mansions are you hiding that gun? Why should it be okay for you to have a Communist Chinese assault rifle when you think nobody else should have one? And if you don't have one, why would you intimate to Outdoor Life that you do?"

Kerry has made it a point to appeal to gun owners by staging a number of gun-friendly photo-ops on the campaign trail.

Assault rifles are not illegal in MA.

Kerry Questioned About His 'Chinese Assault Rifle'

IIRC, Senator Rockefeller of W. Virginia bragged about a gifted M-16 (or AR-15) that
he kept in a closet at home.
(This was maybe ten or more years ago that I heard that on TV.)

"I thought full automatic weapons were outlawed (by Congress) in the 1930s

Nope not 'outlawed' outright. BUT heavily 'controlled' by the Firearms Act of 1934. And it's hard to get approval for the Class III license now, lot's of hoops to jump through and the transfer cost is steep.

That being said, some states like my wonderful IL do ban them - period (Since about the late 1970's.) At one time in the past I was going to get a Class III license. The cost then was 'only' about $200 IIRC.

OK, controlled, not banned outright. That makes sense. Pretty big camel came in under that nose, didn't it?

I mean to say a pretty big camel came in under the tent flap after that nose back in 1934.

I think he was getting confused about he and Momma T's kitchen staff. Seems there was a Chinese ah salting food in his house, not a Chinese assult weapon.

I was planning a hunting trip to Maine a few years back and was told by everyone who makes the trip to go around Mass because if you got caught with the weapons you would be in serious trouble. Apparently you could get some kind of waiver to carry them through the state but it was burdensome. I don't know if this was myth or reality, but everyone sure believed it and avoided Mass.

Sen Kerry, is it fully automatic? If it is a “Communist Chinese assault rifle” it is fully automatic.

Actually, as someone else may have said, not true. It could very well be a Chinese SKS "Assault" rifle. A semi-automatic rifle. Very common then, and now.

I believe that in Ohio (I know this was true when I was a kid - game regulations may have changed since then) it's illegal to hunt deer with a rifle. My father used his rifle (30/30 Marlin Lever) to hunt in Pennsylvania only. You have to (or had to) use a shotgun and "slugs" ("punkin' balls") as ammunition. That being said, I'm confident Kerry doesn't know this and he probably does think that you hunt deer with buckshot.

As I answered in an earlier post, I don’t consider the SKS an “assault” rifle because it is not the weapon of choice of assault troops. An assault rifle is not just any rifle used by a military force. If that were true, then Remington pump and auto shotguns and bolt action rifles would also be “assault weapons”. An assault rifle is a rifle commonly used in the assault – fully automatic with a large magazine capacity.

Even in California the SKS is not an "assault weapon". They're "legal" if the mag is pinned, so that it can't be removed. It's definately not an assault RIFLE, which would be fully auto capable.

A previous thread revealed many Freeper hunters that also like to use a shotgun for hunting deer. Shotguns can fire a solid slug shell which packs quite a wallop.

As does buckshot (hence the name.) However, unlike Kerry, no one has ever crawled on their belly with a shotgun hunting deer. Never happened.

Under federal law, it is legal to own grenades. Doen't ask me where to buy them. Besides that you'll have to convince either the sheriff or chief of police to write a letter approving your potential purchase. Good luck with that!
