If he ripped the sign from the little girl's hands, that is an assault and battery against a child. It is also a strong armed robbery to take someone else's property by force.

I was thinking rather than the police visiting the goon someone with a Louisville Slugger might have more of an impact ... if you know what I mean.

Oh, he will be IDed. Huntington, West Virginia is not a particularly large city, and the local police there are already looking for people who have both egged and shot up the local GOP headquarters.
Also, news photographers don't just take two or three photos and then leave. I'm sure Mr. Snyder has dozens of photos of this event which were never put on the wires. There were probably local TV newsc rews there as well.
