My daughter decided she'd best leave for a while after
confronting machete wielding thugs in her kitchen who
not only took all her food, but the refrigerator too.

Anarchy reigns there right now.
No electricity, no water...
the streets are dark.
It is thuggery heaven, and little else.

Anarchy always rules in an area that has no law enforcement. The same can be said of some of our own regions in the USA after a hurricane. My folks had to guard their home, armed, after Andrew hit.

Oh my, Onyx!! I'm sorry to hear your daughter went through that! How'd she get away? Anyway, glad she's coming home.

Did you see "Night Line" on what they're predicting for New Orleans, not for Hurricane Ivan, but for sometime in the future? Sounds much more dire than the 8.0 California is supposed to get.

Oh, my good Lord, onyx. I had no idea your daughter was in such a situation. I'm adding them to my prayers. She must be terrified, and I'm sure you are, too.

My niece who just started med school on Grand Cayman a couple of weeks ago was flown out - the school chartered two planes for the students.

I called my sister last night to ask when school will start again. She said that they just don't know.

I will tell her about the looters.

I heard yesterday that all of Grand Cayman was underwater at some point during the hurricane.

I will never build a house on a barrier island, but it sure is fun to stay in someone else's house.
