Statement by the President of CBS News, Andrew Heyward:
"We established to our satisfaction that the memos were accurate or we would not have put them on television. There was a great deal of coroborating [sic] evidence from people in a position to know. Having said that, given all the questions about them, we believe we should redouble our efforts to answer those questions, so that's what we are doing."
If that is all CBS has then there is a problem.
1. She said the memos are fake.
2. CBS didn't talk to her until after they aired the memos meaning their only source of corroberation was unknown when they decided to proceed.
I think it was a local channel in Texas that found her not CBS and she is an active Democrat with bias against the President.
CBS is in a tizzy. they don't know what they are doing or what they are saying. They appear to be just flailing about kind of out of control.
And, they have to deal with the megalomaniac idiot Dan, an arrogant monkey in a business suit, in the midst of all the chaos.
This is big. and CBS, inexplicably, just keeps making it bigger and bigger with each passing day.
A news channel with no credibility will soon become a joke and a laughing stock.
it is very possible that CBS is done for...
This the only time in my life I ever considered sending a Thank You card to Rather. ha!
I've got it: Dan got them from the mugger "Kenneth" in New York!
hah?
I know kerryspot coined this but I hate this term. I hope this doesn't stick. I feel this is giving credit to the Islamofascist movement by coining a term coming from them and it makes me cringe every time I see it. I much rather use the term "Pajama Warriors." But hey, that's JMHO. :)
This is a sign of great internal pressure and two things to take from it :
#1 They are no longer claiming the documents are authentic.
This means they have realized that the claim that Dan Rather has been making all along is not supportable
#2 Dan Rather is no longer th spokesman for this issue. Someone higher up the food chain has stepped in and started issuing the statements.
Things are not going well for Danny Boy inside CBS these days......

The network's redoubling effort:
It is up to us to see to it that this story replaces Lacy Peterson/Kobi Bryant when the 24 hour news cycle has nothing to talk about.
'Tator. I said much the same on another thread.
We really need you here. This is important. We can make history, or this could just die.
I just wrote my local CBS affiliate in Chattanooga TN with a nice but firm email. Hope the pressure filters upstream !
CBS refuses.. so the FCC goes to court. If the court rules the media can not hide a forger guilty of fraud, then the media has lost a huge hunk of power. That is the media could lose the right to never reveal sources of a story. The case law used to support the right not te reveal souces was based on the source leaking government or corporate wrong doing. Not on a source trying to use forgery to effect the outcome of a presidential election. This would be a very bad case for the meida to let go to the Supreme Corut.
Now if you are ABC, NBC, or USA Today do you let the court take away your right to keep all sources secret or do you make the story mute by revealing the source yourself? What if the source is the DNC? Do you take the fall for them.. or let it all hang out to dry?
If the source is as I suspect someone from the Democratic party there is a watergate situation where the Democrats go to prison. The key slip was that they have been working on this story for 4 years. That says DNC or its allies does it not? It could hurt the Democrats far more than watergate hurt the Republicans.
This was a huge gamble that just did not pay off. I can't believe the major media is this stupid. It had to be done by someone too young to understand there was a day when there were no computers.
This story is a long way from being over. And the for the first time in memory the media does not have reasons to present a single united front. The solidarity of the media may for the first time in my memory come apart.
Think of all the bad press and loss that CBS is taking. The consequences of revealing the truth... must be far worse than the consequences of stone walling the situation.
The problem for CBS is that USA today had all six documents. USA Today knows the source. Will Gannett lose the power to keep all sources secret to protect CBS and Dan RAther? I would not be surprised to find these documents were shopped to all the networks except Fox.
There is no way this can go away. There will be House and perhaps senate hearings. With talk radio, Fox, and the Internet a new day has dawned... CBS is going down. But the only reason for CBS to continue to stone wall is the consequences of telling the truth are just plain disasterous for CBS and more importantly for the source.
The Story CBS did on 60 minutesd was 100 percent anti Bush. There was zero attempt to present the Bush side of the argument.
The Supreme court in the FCC Vs Red Lion case ruled that he FCC can take stations licenses for a broadcasters failure to present both sides in a controversial story.
There is no requirement that both sides be presented equally. Some say a 9 to 1 ratio against Bush, that is 9 against Bush to 1 for him, would have been legal. But as Krauthammer said on FOX the CBS 60 minutes story was 100 percent one sided. They had facts that cast doubt but did not air them. That can cost them billions of dollars worth of station licenses.
The FCC under Collin Powell's son might give Viacom the option of selling the network and all stations at cost, or suffering the loss of all 0&0 licenses. They might have to turn the equivent of states evidence to get that deal. The FCC has made stations sell at a huge loss. Forced sales have been held up bh the courts. Punishment can be sell out at a loss or lose it all.
It is not a good day for CBS.. And we got a picture of where NBC was going when Matt Lauer and Chirssy Matthews ate Kitty Kelly a new one.
This is along way from being over. and I expect there may be a divide an conquer strategy. This is a watergate sized story that may very well destroy a large hunk of the old media. And a fair amount of the Democratic party.
Let the games begin.
So what is two times zero?
That should be our goal.
Nothing less.
How to hail all freepers to a plan?
Let's talk about that.
CBS is dead. In six weeks.

Thank you.
For me, this is not about the election. I am damned tired of being lied to.
Perhaps, it has always been such. They have always tried to tell me, "No pain reliever is stronger than Bayer", when in fact they are all the same.
But this time, it's different. I am very motivated.
Can you imagine anyone with much skill doing this bad a forgery? Doing it on Microsoft word? If you are 50 years old or older how do you fail to remember that computer printers are not typewriters? If you are in your 20s don't you research what was in use in 1973? Would I try to take a picture of a guy in 1973 by having him sitting in a 1976 car?
This whole thing does not ring true.
The more I think about this the more I think this must be some sort of setup or con act. I wonder if someone really hates Rather. Perhaps a former employee of CBS news. Could it be that CBS bought the story? Could CBS have had Rathers daughter offering to buy dirt on Dubya?Could someone think hey a half hour's work at Kinkos and a pitch to Rathers daughter, would be followed by smome cash from Rather? What else explains the story? Could Kerry have been offering bucks for dirt on Bush and an enterprising Word user... decided to try to make a few bucks?... and they fell for it?
What if the Kerry Campaign was trying to buy dirt on Bush .. and bought a forgery. What if the Kerry people vouched for the fake Documents being valid. Would Rather believe a top Kerry staffer over his own hired experts?
It appears Rather fell for some sort of Con, and is now between a rock and a hard place.
Something has to explain CBS buying these very sloppy forgeries. The source had to be very very believable to CBS.
The fact that they not yet provided any other substantiation, while having thrust forward such feeble forgeries about which they were warned in multiple ways aforehand, under the guise of having been vetted by a legitimate news organization, speaks volumes of substantiation concerning their transparent and corrupt attempts to influence an election on the basis of documents they had every reason to believe were forged.
They have shown they are partisans shills outside the mainstream ethics of journalism, ready and willing to trade reputation for momentary corrupt influence.
Just as their rationalization for bypassing the documents' authenticity question to advocate for the so-called accuracy of something fraudulently represented is not logical, Heyward's current statement cleaves to SeeBS's unsubstantianted premise they claim to believe (against reason) to be true. They would sucker all of us with this Leftist heart-felt old saw, that is, their so-called belief. A lawyer knows how to defend an individual against claims of lying if the individual "believes" what he's saying, but these are corporate lies, propped up with the strongest tenuous support they've got, that is, fraudulently produced documents represented by SeeBS if not the counterfeiter(s) to be government documents. Lawmakers long ago clarified these circumstances to be criminal violations, with serious consequences.
SeeBS's "belief" in this context is a lie, told to their corrupted Kool-aid drinkers so as to perpetuate their undeserved lofty journalistic reputation and government-influencing past, while harkening to an individual's get-out-of-jail-free impetus for saying that which can be proved to be false.
SeeBS has surprised the citizenry for the last time concerning their willingness to use jihadist tactics: being willing, figuratively, to blow themselves and their employees' reputations up for their corrupt, partisan cause.
SeeBS seeks to convert its constituents' ideological generosity and the fog of time to lift themselves from the hook onto which they've climbed. But, as the saying goes, "Elephants don't forget."
As capitalists we can refuse to help SeeBS pay their employees, and as a republic with a still-functioning judiciary, we should prosecute the perpetrators for the felonies they've committed and other laws they may have broken, in full measure.
