According to Laurie Dhue at the bottom of the hour all flights are grounded at LAX due to a "radio problem"...

Actually, it's 11:20 EST here. CMH is an international airport...they don't stop running at 11:00. As a pilot, you should know that.

Twenty years ago I was an Airborne Express DC9 pilot. I have flown over 100% of this country in the middle of the night and I can assure you there are about 2% of the aircraft flying at this time of the night.

By the way CMH may be "international", but other than the occassional night freighter, there are few if any arrivals scheduled for after 11:00pm

Whose version? LOL!

Something broke down in Palmdale...Joe, Karl...help me with the technical terms. The planes were grounded as they didn't have communication with them. The incoming, apparently SOME of them, were allowed to land.

The smaller ones, I believe HAVE been allowed to fly, thru all of this. ANYONE can correct me if I'm wrong there.

It appears that a few are now finally taking off. I SAW one myself...well, not the take-off, but the plane.

Obviously it WAS a huge glitch. NOW......WHAT that glitch was and how it was caused is probably up for grabs.

Any aircraft that were outside the Palmdale control area headed into it would have been dirvited by the control center that they were in to an alternate airport and grounded after landing.

Only the aircraft already in the Palmdale control area would continue to their destination and land. Once close to or in the terminal control area of the airport would regain communication with the control tower since their communication is independant and would at that point sort out any conflicts and control the landing sequence.

Without a clearance from ATC they can't release any aircraft for takeoff.

Private aircraft flying under VFR rules aren't affected unless they are IFR pilots requesting an IFR to VFR on top which would no doubt be denied.

Nothing much out of ONT yet, but I imagine this is an interesting game of juggling to get everything back up in the air.

they tried something interesting, they sent the first two southwest planes out without having them check into ZLA (LA Center)

Burbank Tower handed them to Socal Departure who handed them to Socal Approach who handed them to Joshua Approach and then the regular system booted up and they were vectored to Oakland. There was a HEAVY plane out of LAX following them too. Lost them past Gorman. They were using the lower altitude controllers and radios.

Thanks, jeff, and everyone who is posting these great links.

I was on FR the morning the space shuttle crashed. FReepers in Texas were the first to report it. They saw the thing go down over their houses into the woods.

There were the usual naysayers...oh, it was just a meteorite, etc.

I'll take FReeper eyewitness (and in this case, earwitness) reports over the general media anyday.

Your pushing it Fred, and you seem very argumentative. Lose the personal attacks. I really don't want to get ugly with you. OK? You've broadcasted you are a pilot now 5 times. We believe you. Time to come in for a landing capt'n.
