You're kidding yourself. Arnold's "base" of moderate Republicans and crossover Democrats probably supports this move - or at the very least do not consider prohibition of 50 caliber rifles any kind of "deal breaker".
The "base" you speak of voted for McClintock anyway, and they were a$$whomped 48-13 by the Governator last October.
Politically speaking, Arnold owes the McClintock base nothing.
