Propane tank attached to washing machine left on train tracks
GALT, Calif. - A Galt police officer was able to stop a train before it hit a rudimentary explosive device left on the railroad tracks, officials said.
The officer, Christopher Smith, saw the device - a washing machine with a propane tank attached - on the Union Pacific tracks around 11 p.m. Monday, said Sgt. Charles Dedriksen. There was a lighted flare in front of the device, he said.
Smith lit a flare of his own and ran toward an approaching freight train, stopping it before it hit the washing machine, Dedriksen said.
Officials said the device is unusual, but fire officials said the explosion probably would have little to moderate impact on the train.
Galt police, local fire officials and Union Pacific are investigating the device and the FBI has been notified, Dedriksen said.
Officer Andrea Young with Union Pacific police said she has not seen a similar device, but railroad officials occasionally find stolen cars, couches and water heaters left on tracks. http://www.katu.com/news/story.asp?ID=71464
