Chechen leaders’ relatives say stop terrorism, punish massacre perpetrators

Moscow (AsiaNews) – Events in Beslan have had an unusual and unexpected impact in Chechnya. The local population, which had largely backed the actions by Chechen terrorists, seems to have turned against them. Separatists’ families, including those of anti-Russian resistance leaders such as Maskhadov, Basayev, Umarov –who are thought to have orchestrated the Beslan attack– have publicly condemned the actions of their relatives.

Pamzan and Ruslan Maskhadov, cousins of former Chechen President Aslan Maskhadov called on him to end terrorism. “Today, life is back to normal in the Chechen Republic. It is possible to work and receive a salary,” the two brothers said. “Consequently, the reasons for terror are neither present nor justified.” They urged Mashkadov to put an end to his actions once and for all and stop the gangs “who have killed hundreds of innocent children.” They also asked Ossetians for forgiveness.

Zholzan Abdulkadyrova, Aslan Maskhadov’s sister, appealed to her brother telling him to stop the crimes against helpless people. In the early phase of the Beslan crisis, Ms Abdulkadyrova had offered herself as a hostage in place of the children held. “Chechens,” she said, “do not want to be the enemies either of Ossetians, Ingushs or Russians.”

Junus Kurazov, deputy mufti in Chechnya’s Vedensky district and husband to Shamil Basayev’s cousin, expressed his solidarity with the people of North Ossetia. “These child-killing gangsters are terrorists and should be punished. These people will never receive forgiveness for their sins; only Almighty Allah might do it.” He added that “terrorism has no national or ethnic colour. Whoever they are, no matter their nationality, ethnicity or religion, they should be punished.”

In his Vedensky mosque, mufti Kurazov led Friday prayers for the murdered children and the people of Ossetia. “Ossetians have always helped Chechens, and in these heavy days, Chechens must pray and support them,” Kurazov said.

Umar Gudaev, Basayev’s father-in-law, and Nasir Sideev, husband to Basayev’s aunt, joined Kurazov in expressing their outrage. “The terrorists have crossed the point of no return into the world of cruelty and brutality. They have used weapons against defenceless children and women,” they said.

Relatives of Doku Umarov, another Chechen leader suspected of involvement in the Beslan attack, have also condemned the terrorist actions.

Despite the genuine revulsion on the part of terrorists’ relatives anger and resentment have boiled over and led some Chechens to prepare reprisal attacks against rebel leaders’ relatives. “Their lives were in danger,” said Ilya Shabalkin, official representative of the Russian federal counterterrorist services (FSB), “and we had evidence that ‘spontaneous groups’ were being formed in various areas of Chechnya to kill Chechen leaders” relatives. However, because of our preventive actions we were able to take them into protective custody and save them from retaliation,” the FSB general said.

The death of the innocent has provoked sorrow and angst throughout Chechnya. Many Chechens have joined the chorus of voices condemning the Beslan attack. Several demonstrations have taken place in the republic to denounce the terrorists and condemn the massacre. One demonstrator was quoted as saying: “As Chechens we can relate to what happened in Beslan. And we are ready to help the people hurt by the terrorists.” (AF)

Former hostages on verge of suicide
09/10/2004 11:15

Moscow doctors try to help desperate mothers, who lost their children in Beslan

Ten former hostages from Beslan arrived in Moscow on Thursday on board a plane of the Russian defense ministry and were hospitalized to Serbsky's State Scientific Center in Moscow (the central psychiatric hospital in Russia). Doctors say that each of those people, who experienced the nightmare of the hostage crisis in Beslan, were on the verge of suicide. One of the former hostages committed suicide, when she came back home from the stormed school. Psychiatrists say 132 other victims of the horrific terrorist attack need to be hospitalized urgently, the Kommersant wrote.

Ten leading specialists of the Serbsky's Institute left for North Ossetia soon after the end of the hostage crisis. The doctors rendered first psychological aid to those, who survived the storm of the Beslan school.

"Our specialists work at hospitals and at funeral ceremonies," the institute's director Tatiana Dmitrieva said. "Unfortunately, we have lost one woman. She committed suicide when she identified her dead child," Dmitrieva said. Psychiatrists are deeply concerned about a possible series of possible suicides to occur. "It is not time for mass suicides, - senior psychiatrist of the Russian Healthcare Ministry Boris Kazakovtsev said. - An outburst of suicides usually starts a month or two after an emergency situation ends."

Interfax, meanwhile, reports that seven-year-old boy Beklastan Khudalov, who was seriously injured in the terrorist act in North Ossetia, died on Friday overnight at a hospital in Moscow. The death toll thus reached 327.

Twelve-year-old boy Soslan was taken to Moscow with symptoms of autism. The boy was not showing any reactions for several days. He was looking at everyone with a glassy look, swinging on the chair all the time. Today the boy asked to go outside - it was the first time, when he did not scream at night.

There are no Muslim shills here, there are however a whole bunch of people trying to steer scrutiny away fro the Russian government, and their part of the blame for this situation.

There are also hypocrites who call for genocide in Chechnya for the murder of 150 children, and refuse to comment on what to do about a Christian country that systematically murdered 39 million children at a rate exceeding 800,000 per year.

I see your concern for dead children...when do we start leveling America in revenge for the thirty nine million (and counting) we've murdered?

"...someone is finally putting a knife to their throats..."

Russia has had a knife at the Chechen throat for over a century.

The Communist shills on this site make me sick.

You may not have noticed, but the people aborting their children are also the same people stating that this is not a "Christian" country. The Christians in this country do not support abortion, nor participate in abortions.

But this has nothing to do with the price of tea in China, nor the situation in Chechnya.

I am not a Putin fan, necessarily. As an ex-KGB officer, I trust Putin about as far as my little sister could throw him. To whatever degree Russia has exacerbated the Chechen situation is subject to debate.

What is not subject to debate however, is that the massacre of schoolchildren in Beslan is a direct extension of the Muslim propensity to target innocents for murder. It is entirely consistent with their actions in numerous incidents around the world.

I believe if there is one ounce of contrition on the part of the families of the Chechen leaders it is completely and entirely because they know Russia is going to be coming for them, and not because suddenly their humanity was touched by something they would see as an atrocity. For them, the terrorism of children is par for the course. What is new is that someone is actually targeting them for a change.

Again when the Chechen rebels start arresting the terrorists in their camps and the Chechen leaders of these terrorists then their protestations of ignorance and outrage are a ploy - bad cop good cop. Maskhadov playing Sinn Fein to their Basayev's IRA.

Detained Beslan Gunman Says Maskhadov, Basayev Planned School Takeover

And why was he not arrested in the past? Warlord Shamil Basayev said in a Web site statement that his group was behind the theater raid and promised that future attacks would be even more destructive. (Beslan was the fulfillment of that evil promise)

"The next time, those who come won't make any demands, won't take hostages," Basayev said on a Chechen Web site. Their "main goal will be destroying the enemy and exacting maximum damage."

Basayev claimed the attack was planned without the knowledge of the breakaway republic's elected leader, Aslan Maskhadov. He asked Maskhadov's forgiveness for preparing the raid in secret and said he would resign from all posts in the rebel hierarchy.

--- So why is Maskhdov not under arrest for violating Basayev's orders? In addition Basayev was a known al-Qaeda terrorists (hospital seizure) before the Moscow theater attack so Basayev having him in his organization makes him an accomplice to terror.

Luis, did they or did they not come into the country, agreeing to abide by the laws of the land to get a visa and then attack the country. Did they not live in the United States for months before attacking in the name of Islam?

I understand the term American, but I do not recall the term American Muslims. While you can be an American and convert to Islam, you cannot be a Muslim and be an American as the Tennant of Islam forbid it. Islam demands that you attack your own Country to convert it to Islam.

So saying American Muslim is like saying you can mix oil and water whether you like it or not. You see Luis, I do not hate you, just your sin. The Bible tells me to love the sinner, and hate the sin. While you can choose to be a baby killing madman, or to work to defend them and protect them, I can feel sorry for you and your slavery to sin. I wish you to be free, not dead.

I would much prefer to see someone understand the lies of Islam and turn from their wicked ways than have to kill them in a battle field.

Know the difference between a US soldier and a Jihadi? A Jihadi must hate to operate, while a US Soldier can get the job done without hating the target. I do not recall ever seeing any Biblical Justification for hate, who teaches you this junk? Your Imam? Your idea of the Bible teaching hate is because you have never cracked one open. You hate what you do not understand.

Apparently, you hate a lot of things...

There are two books to the Bible, do you acknowledge them both?

What the heck are you talking about? Have you ever read a Bible, there are five books in the Torah alone!

From my letter you are reading and responding to:
Remember that the Torah is the first five books of the Bible, written around 4000-6000 years ago.

You either do not comprehend what you read, or do not have the intellectual honesty to bother reading others responses to you. It took a lot of work to gather the refutation of your slander, It is difficult to intelligently discuss a point with someone who's only defense is to stick their fingers in their ears and yell "I can't hear you."

Try a little bit harder ok? Or go back to DU where repeating empty rhetoric is lauded as a valid thought process.

Thanks for the ping. EXCELLENT Post!

What you said is proof, beyond anything else that an islamic is an islamic, unless they begin to show something else...a whole LOT of something else..not token expressions of indignation just to save their own skins.

In WWII, we didn't differentiate between the Nazis in uniform and the Nazis who were not in uniform. Nazi civilians in Bavaria were all just as evil as the guys pulling the triggers.

Same goes for islamism. Either they change themselves, which they will not do since it is a cult, or we will assist them by doing what needs to be done to protect ourselves [indeed the entire world] from their tyrranical desires.

From your link:

There you have it. Mosnews says, that one of the terrorists said, that a man nicknamed Polkovnik at a meeting in a forrest said, that Maskhadov said, that we must carry out the attack.

I come to no such conclusion about Maskhadov's involvement based on this.

How did Nazis rise to power in Germany?

I'm not talking about how he rose to power, but how he and Nazism were removed from the face of the earth. Total war. Bomb cities. Bomb everything. Nukes.

Your are arguing with me but if one THINKS he'll see that your talk leads to the same conclusions as mine. A Total War. It's long overdue.

What exactly should be Russia's Chechen policy? Just cut it loose, and have the ethnic Russians decamp? Maybe Russia should, although I am not sure that will pacify the situation frankly.

Thus far, Russia's Chechen policy hasn't worked very well. Then again, Chechen freedom didn't work out either.

No one is in any way justifying the actions of the terrorists, but if heavy-handed tactics did little more than fuel the brutality witnessed in Beslan, more intense heavy-handed brutality is not going to fix anything at all.

The second thing, and this of course is one of those hind-sight is 20/20 things...at this stage Russia should not have a Chechen policy at all!

Chechnya, along with any other countries that were part of the Soviet Union against their will, should have been freed.

Eventually, NATO is going to handle this mess.

I think that eventually, we will see the creation of a very special military branch trained and equipped to handle these sorts of things.
