UPDATE: NEW PROOF OF FORGERY
Following the Little Green Footballs blog lead, CB decided to test the pantograph replication technique on another of the CBS documents to see if it held true. Using Microsoft Word on its factory default settings with 12 point Times New Roman font we copied the address line of CBS memo #1 and overlapped the two for comparison.
As you can see the test worked and, in doing so, inadvertantly uncovered more proof that the document is a forgery. The new evidence revolves around the fact that Microsoft Word auto-formats its text using the centering function. When the text alignment for center is selected each subsequent line will be precisely centered underneath the previous one with each word of the text readjusting to meet this alignment as new letters are entered into the line. Since typewriters mechanically stamp letters onto a sheet of paper one at a time, it is physically impossible to create a mechanical typewriter document that perfectly aligns two or more centered rows of text on top of each other. The address bar on CBS Memo #1 is perfectly centered and perfectly aligned, thus it had to have come from a computer word processor and not a typewriter. The replication experiment in Microsoft Word with an identical match further validates this origin.
You're kidding, right? This is a personal memo, never intended to see the light of day, supposedly, and you're proposing that the author drew a light pencil line down the center to center the address?
YESSSSS, now I remember.. I used a selectric typewriter in the army my last couple of months and I recall how freaking irritating it was to try and center text. You actually had to figure out the spacing because some letters took up half a space. We always used to just guesstimate and we were never truly centered.
First, thank you for your service! I was born and raised in the USAF, and have been married to an active duty USAF member for the past 17 years. I've never been active duty, but I DO know how military life can be unfair! I wouldn't trade my upbringing or current situation for the WORLD, though. It's a proud life! My point was, though, that I sincerely doubt whoever typed that would have taken the time to consider the size of each and every individual space and letter when centering the ADDRESS on this memo. You make a good point, though, that once he did it...it could just be re-used over and over. I just thought it was funny that there was so much attention to the centering on the memo, rather than the other odd things.
In the Air Force...the proper abbreviation IS 1st Lt now. Not sure what it was back then but the latest guidance is to write it as 1st Lt. This is for Air Force only. The army is still different. Also...Lt. Col. is the proper abbreviation now. Up until the change earlier this year...it was LTC...like the army still is. Not sure what the abbreviations were 30 years ago...but I suspect the person wh did the hoax looked at a current rank abbreviation guide.
You are absolutely correct about the 'second aspect'. That was what I was alluding to.
Who's gonna believe 'em now about anything?
BTW, what other source do you think their could be for these docs than the rats? I can see someone in the background like Soros commissioning the hit, but I gotta gut feeling this comes from the Clinton camp.
The coming days will flush out the actors. This is good.
